[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Large Copper is a magnificent butterfly whose shiny metallic-looking wings flash brightly as it flies over its fenland habitat.
The British race of this butterfly (dispar) has been extinct for over 150 years and most of our knowledge of its life cycle and ecology comes from studies of the similar race (batavus) found in the Netherlands.
There have been several reintroduction attempts to sites in both Britain and Ireland, but these have all ultimately failed. Research is now being conducted to see whether a further attempt is worthwhile in more extensive habitats available in the Norfolk Broads.
Conservation status
UK BAP status: Priority Species
Butterfly Conservation priority: high
European threat status: not threatened
Fully protected in Great Britain
Bern Convention (Annexe IV) and EC Habitats and Species Directive (Annexe II and IV).
European/world range
Locally but widely distributed in central Europe as far north as southern Finland, and across to Asia. Divided into three races: dispar formerly in Britain, batavus in the Netherlands (both single brooded), and rutilus (double brooded). The latter is declining in many European countries while batavus is reduced to two sites.
Foodplants
The sole foodplant of the single-brooded races (dispar and batavus) is Water Dock (Rumex hydrolapathum). Other docks are used by the rutilus race in continental Europe.
Habitat
The single brooded races breed in open fen vegetation where Water Dock grows at a high density in relatively open, sunny positions. The race rutilus breeds in a far greater range of damp habitats in Europe.

Hi Mircea,
what you've actually found is a Scarce Copper.
Very similar looking but doesn't have the black spot on each wing that a Large Copper has.
Great shot that is sharp, well composed and has a brilliant DOF.
Well done,
Joey

Excellent butterfly photo. The angle of butterfly makes this a pleasing composition. The colors look very rich, yet natural. Nice focus. Great background with complimentary color to show off the orange butterfly.

Beautiful shot of a beautiful butterfly
Excellent composition, good shrapness and great contrsting OOF background.
Well done

Bine ai revenit in Romania, din cate vad nu pierzi timpul. Bravo.

Horia
