Dark Green Fritillary
(Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Nymphalidae
Sub-family: Heliconiinae
Genus: Argynnis
Sub-genus:Mesoacidalia
Species: aglaja

Although this large powerful butterfly is one of our most widespread Fritillaries, its is rarely encountered except in suitable areas. It is very similar in appearance and size to the rarer High Brown Fritillary. The uppersides are a golden orange-brown colour with a pattern of black spots and crescents. The females tend to be paler in colour. Its name is derived from the colouration of the underside of its wings which a green leading to pale yellow-brown with pure white spots.
During hot sunny days, the males fly constantly in search of females displaying a distinctive flight pattern of rapid wing beats followed by a fast smooth glide before yet more rapid wing beats. In order to get close to a Dark Green Fritillary, you should search for them basking in weak sunshine during the morning or evening.

Adult wingspan: 58-68mm. Pupa: 19mm long. Larvae: 35-40mm long. Ova: -mm x 1.0mm.

Hi Mircea!
Very nice and beautiful profile of Nymphalid butterfly. Great sharpness and DOF. I like also contrast (as I see the result of using flash and F/13 :>) and general composition.
TFS and best greetings from Lodz,
Radomir

Hi Mircea,
beautiful image of this butterfly.
Good focus and color detail.
I find the framing distracting though with the name on the left. I'd prefer the name on the bottom.

Hi Mircea!

Very good macro. I like composition and dark BG. Photo is very detailed and sharp. I'm not sure about colours - are they natural or slighty changed by flash?

Hi Mircea,
Superbe composition!
Les détails sur ce papillon sont magnifiques. Bon piqué et très belles couleurs. Une réussite...
Bravo,

Claude

Hello Mircea,
the delicate mother-of-pearl lustre of scales has been very well presented here. Contrasts and colour saturation maybe a little bit too hard, at least on my screen. Powerful, well detailed, well composed presentation of Argynnis aglaja with much aesthetical appeal. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter
