I'm not sure but i think that this is the smallest bird from my country. It was so small that the first time i only saw a "dot" moving 15 meters from me. I was not sure if that is a bird :) It's also very fast moving and the thing that makes it special is the fantastic attitude.
I will post as workshop another very small bird:

I'm not sure with one of those two species is smaller (It may be possible that the Goldcrest to be a juvenile)

This is my first picture on Treknature using my new lens Canon EF 400mm f/5.6
I have this lens by 1 month and a half but the past weekend was the first true wildlife session (before i only shoot in parks).
This is the second time in 1 year when i see this species. First time it was on very low light and i used iso 1600. but on this picture the light was pleasant and i used iso 400 (handheld).
Compared with the Canon 100-400 i really like this lens bokeh. I usually used Canon 100-400 at f/7.1 to have a satisfactory resolution. But the prime lens can be used at f/5.6 with no problem. This will give you a more isolated subject. Also the fact that this lens have like half of the elements of the zoom probably is the source of the more pleasant 'out of focus areas' reproduction. They are more uniform.
But they are situation where i will miss the bokeh of Canon 100-400. For example look to those 'spectacular highlights':

Felicitari pentru noul obiectiv!Lucreaza splendid, dar parca claritatea in profunzime este redusa in acest caz, oare din cauza ca ati folosit o diafragma mare?

Buna Anghel,

Fotografia ta cu aceasta pasare este foarte bine realizata. Imi place POV-ul pe care l-ai ales si care ofera o buna perspectiva asupra ei. Redarea culorilor este foarte buna, culorile penajului fiind in ton cu fundalul. De asemenea compozitia imaginii, cu acea creanga inclinata, contribuie la calitatea imaginii.

Buna Eliz
O poza foarte frumoasa, are calitate, iar culorile sunt superbe.
Mi-ar placea sa-mi spui mai multe despre obiectivul vechi, eu tocmai mi-am achizitionat unul, eventual ce probleme ai avut cu el, daca ai avut, si ce imi recomanzi si eventual ce diferente sunt intre cele doua, eu inca invat sa folosesc dslr-ul cu noul obiectiv. Multumesc.

A praise-worthy capture of this small Wren, Anghel.
The light coming from the rear of the subject has been used very thoughtfully here.
The plain BG does wonders to enhance the appeal of the picture.

frumoasa captura , cromatica de asemenea !
subiectul capturat este intradevar Troglodytes troglodytes , in terminologia populara ochiuboului sau pantarus , una din cele mai mici pasari care cuibareste in tara noastra ; cea mai mica pasare de la noi si totodata din Europa este in schimb Regulus regulus (auselul cu cap galben);
inca o data felicitari pentru captura!

Good clear and crisp picture which is also well framed. Indeed, wrens are not easy to capture as they move around a lot and are also very small (smallest birds in Europe) - makes the autofocus work overtime!

avec un aussi petit oiseau vous ne diviez vraiment pas etre loin de lui!
la netteté est relativement bonne,dommage qu'il tourne la tête a l'opposé de la lumiere mais dans l'ensemble c'est reussi.

Hello Anghel,
a very nice picture of the Wren, they are not easy to catch,
always moving around. About the size, the Goldcrest are much smaller and I think it's the smallest bird in Europe.
And about the lens, the 400mm is a great lens, sharp full open.
It's pity the 100-400 L differs in quality, the earlier copies could be really bad but newer from around 2002 are mostly great.
The picture is sharp wiht fine details, lovely colours and nice DOF, the bird standout well from the BG.

Hi Anghel,
a great shot with your new lens!
Do you miss the Image Stabilisation on the 100-400? I am thinking of swapping my 100-400 for a 400mm f/5.6 prime but I think I'll miss the IS too much.

...si in primul rand felicitari pentru o asemenea "jucatie"! Cred ca e super misto sa ai asa un prime tare cand ai de gand sa pozezi animale in libertate...

Foate frumoasa poza ta. Imi plac mult si detaliile de pe pasare dar si lumina naturala tipica de iarna aici - desi bate soarele direct, parca totusi e o atmosfera mai racoroasa ceea ce face poza cu atat mai autentica.

Referitor iar la comparatia ta din nota, era cred cam clar care va avea un bokeh mai fain si o versatilitate a adancimii campului mai misto...oricum, e bine de stiut cam la ce valori se invart astea si multumesc mult is pentru aprtea aia din prezentare.

Great display of a soft arrangement of brown colours of the feathers. Great camera work and a real feast to the eye. I like the position you have captured this one from the side showing us the size of the bird. The lifted tail feathers is lovely to look at. Good focus and framing, presented in a delightful manner.
