Another picture in Maramures, a Mourning Cloak Butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa).
It is a solitaire butterfly, overwinter in adult form. They spend the winter frozen in tree cavities or in unheated buildings. Adult emerge from their winter hibernation and seek each other out for mating in the spring. The females lay eggs together on a single tree, in a mass that surrounds a twig. The butterflies probably die soon after mating and egg laying, having spent as much as 10 months as adults, a long life for a butterfly!!! Some authors suggest that there is only one generation per year, new adults resulting by July. Others suggest that there may be two generations per year.
The caterpillars emerge from eggs and they will remain together on the same plant (willows, aspens, elms and birch). As with all caterpillars, they eat voraciously and grow rapidly. If disturbed on a branch, the mass of caterpillars will shake and vibrate in unison, thus, presumably, startling or frightening a potential predator.
The adult butterflies will occasionally come to flowers for nectar, but it's thought that most of their sustenance comes from sap or decaying fruit. Using tree sap, Mourning Cloaks can gain from arising so early from hibernation.
They wing colors become darkly at low temperature.

Beautiful black and white butterfly. The flecks of brown are barely visible, but reflect the rock below. Nice detail. Well done.

Hi Lucian,
You are very lucky to have caught this butterfly! I have seen it sometimes, specially in spring, but never succeeded to make a picture. They mostly land on trees, too far away for a picture.
Best regards
Anne

Excellent shot of the underside of antiopa showing details of markings. I saw this flying by yesterday along the Baltic coast but it's really hard to find them resting. Well done!
