Another butterfly in Maramures – Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)
The Painted Lady is found everywhere in the world except South America, the Arctic, and Australia. They prefer clover fields, flowery meadows and hilly country.
The Painted Lady has a pointed forewing which bears a distinct white bar. The upperside of the freshly emerged butterfly is orange with rose-like overtones.
The caterpillars that hatch out feed continuously and molt several times. The Painted lady consumes more than 100 different plants, some include thistles, Burdock, and Groundsel. The Larval foodplants are thistles and members of the families Asteraceae and Malvaceae.
Lifespan depends on the climate, but is probably never more than one winter. Only adults survive through winter. |

Macro molto bella, Lucian!
Bella luce sulla farfalla, ottimi i colori e il contrasto con lo sfondo scuro, bravo!
Ciao e grazie.

Hallo Parvulescu,
the outline and the colours of the butterfly become particularly clear before the dark background. In most cases, cardui is presented in bright sun light on a flower. Your composition, thus, underlines the beauty of the butterfly in a special way. Due to great sharpness details of the hairy body, the eyes and the legs become very clear.
Best wishes, Peter
Hi Parvulescu
Lovely shot. Good clarity and sharpness. Nice colours. Lovely to view. TFS.
Yeap this butterfly is everywhere in the world. I took pictures of it smack in the Californian desert. Nu multe animale au in comun deserturile din vestul Amrican si crangurile din Maramures... Nici macar vrabiile ori turturica....
