Name:Orchis coriophora
Family: Orchidaceae

The orchid family is one of the most evolved and most succesful stories from the Plants reign. With over 30.000 species streching all over the world, from equatorial rain forest to Groenland, adapting well to vey different ecosystems, being parasite, saprophyte or just plain chlorophyle based self sustained, are told apart from other plants by their specific shape of flowers.
O. coriophora is a regular plant that can be found in all Europe. Preferes suny hill or mountain meadows with enough water. Grows up to 30 cm high in good conditions, but usualy they are about 15 cm.
In june-july sends up a flower spike with flesh-purple or brownish flowers. These flowers have a foul smell, stink bug-like, and only insects I saw visit them were ants. There is though a subspecies that grows among the others that have a nice fragrant odour, can be found one in about 20-30 individuals.
(This one was stinky).

Hello Petru,
This is another interesting post with a very informative note. Concerning the picture itself I have an impression that it is a bit too flat - I have no idea why this is. I can only guess it an effect of using flash, and to some noise resulting from scanning. Anyway, I like to learn about plants from your photos. It's also a great idea to make a theme "Flora Balcanica". It may become a nice and informative atlas. I will contribute some shots to it :-) By the way - I appreciate your biographic note :-)
Best greetings,
Michal

Excellent colours and composition, pleasant to look at, the complementary colour set red(dish) vs. green works nicely.
Well-focused, and with a slightly larger DOF all of the flower would have been sharp. I guess that the somewhat flat look may in part be due to part of the flower being soft and melting into the BG. Another one could be that the distance to the flower was large and you used tele - because of the different viewing angle shots will appear more dramatic if you move the camera towards your subject.
Kind regards,
Gabi

Hi Petru,
Your narrow DOF works fine here... Clean and effective composition! Good colours and details...
Great note, educational!
