Latin name: Polyommatus icarus

Size: Wingspan up to 35mms.
Months seen: May to October.
Food: Nectar. The caterpillars feed on bird's-foot trefoil
Habitat: Meadows, rough grassland and gardens.
Special features: On sunny days you can sometimes find these butterflies feeding together in small colonies. It's the most commonly seen of all the blue butterflies.
The bright blue male (above right) is unmistakable, but the female (left) is darker, and can have varying amounts of brown on the wings. The first will be on the wing from May to June, while the second emerges from late July to September. Further north there is normally only one brood appearing between July and August.

The green caterpillars are about 10mms long, quite flattened in appearance, and have a shiny black head.

Hello Horia,

This is an impressive capture, pin sharp and well framed!
The colours and pattern are well reproduced and the wing has a fine texture, accurate DoF and a fine 3d feeling...
Well presented in a balanced composition!

Hello Horia,
a good close-up, pretty sharp with a decent DOF.
The colours are nice and natural.
It's maybe a bit tight behind but that's a minor nit.
Well done.

Have a nice weekend,

Gert

Very good macro photo, Horia!
You've got a great parallel POV here which has kept the whole butterfly in focus while leaving the BG really smooth and blurred.
Excellent level of detail.
Gorgeous colours too.

Superb work!

Hi Horia,
beautiful blue in great sharpness. The closeup is so magnificent.
Tight framing allows the butterfly to be scrutinised in great details.
Congratulations.
