RED BACKED SHRIKE MALE (LANIUS COLLURIO)

The male is unmistakably colourful with a red back, mostly black tail, blue-grey rump and head and a characteristic black highwayman's mask. Females and juveniles are duller brown but still have the heavy beak and a suggestion of a mask. Most importantly, they have prominently scaly underparts.

Breeds on heaths and commons with thorn bushes and gorse.

Shrikes sometimes impale their prey on the thorns of a particular bush, thus keeping a 'larder' for food they've already caught.

Migrates to tropical Africa from August to September.

A lovely pose of this shrike, Marius.
The details, colors, light, are wonderful.
Great catchlight in the eye.
The clean BG really brings out the subject well.
Good composition with the diagonal twig and his head turned in profile.
TFS. : )

Hi Marius,

woh!

Excellent! ... equipped with beautiful lights. With great handling of optics that makes the outcome is very clear and impeccable detail. Above all the feathers, which has been very well recorded. GOOD pose of the bird, very well exploited to compose the picture!

TFS!

Jesús

This is lovely Marius. I love all the soft tan tones along with the muted greens. It has a perfect pose and exposure, and depth of field. The soft background really isolates the subject well.

Hi Marius . I have never seen the RED-BACKED SHRIKE in the wild i would like to one day. You have taken it with a nice pose on the bush top . Your use of the light has given bright colours and fine detail in the feathers. It stands out so well from the plain BG. well done .

Hello Marius,
In your serie of the Red-backed Shrikes, this is the one with the best pose. The eye-contact is very beautiful. Excellent sharpness and clear colours. A real great POV and composition.
