COMMON BLUE
Common Blue is aptly named as it is by far the commonest blue species encountered, occurring in just about any habitat situation throughout urban and rural areas.
Males and females show a good deal of colour variation. The ‘typical’ male is a vivid, violet-blue with a crisp, white fringe but with age, in common with other blue species, the uppersides fade and the white fringe is almost absent. Uppersides of typical females closely resemble the Brown Argus but with generally less rich brown and orange colours.
One needs to inspect the spotting pattern on the underside of the hindwings to confidently separate the two species.
Females commonly have a variable blue suffusion on the uppersides and are noticeably smaller then males. Occasional adults have very discrete or even absent cell spots on the underside of the forewings (form icarinus) and can thus be mistaken for Chapman’s Blue (Polyommatus thersites.) |

Hello Marius
the image is sharp with nice colors and fine details on little Common Blue. Great and interesting particulars on batterfly wings for tonalities and light.
Livio
