Hi again everyone and many thanks for all your kind words and comments on my previous posts :)

No. 17 in my Odonata Olympics with Greg and probably my last post until i come back from Croatia (we are leaving very early Monday morning): Erythromma viridulum - Small redeye.

Because this is not a common species here on TN here is
Something about the species:

Range and status: Expanding northwards; once absent in parts of north-west Europe, it became one of the commoner species in the 1980-90s.

Habitat: Favours eutrophic, standing water, clogged with aquatic vegetation. Typical emergents include algal mats, hornworts (Ceratophyllum), water-milfoils (Myriophyllum), and other plants. May also appear on other emergent vegetation, including floating peatmoss (Sphagnum) in bogs.

Flight season: From May to September in the south, buy mainly in July and August in the north.

Here is the list of my d-flies posted this year so far:

Damselflies:
1.Calopteryx virgo - Beautiful demoiselle
2.Platycnemis pennipes - White-legged damselfly
3.Lestes barbarus - Migrant spreadwing
4.Pyrrhosoma nymphula - Large Red damselfly
5.Ischnura elegans - Blue-tailed damselfly
6.Coenagrion ornatum - Ornate bluet
7.Sympecma fusca - Common Winter damsel
8.Enallagma cyathigerum - Common Bluet

Dragonflies:
9.Aeshna isoceles - Green-eyed hawker
10.Aeshna cyanea - Southern hawker
11.Brachytron pratense - Hairy hawker
12.Libellula fulva - Scarce chaser
13.Orthetrum cancellatum - Black-tailed skimmers
14.Orthetrum albistylum - White-tailed skimmer
15.Gomphus vulgatissimus - Common clubtail
16.Onychogomphus forcipatus - Small pincertail

Greg, here is a good chance for you to level the score…I’ll be off for a bit more than a week :) Good luck in finding many many species in your beautiful Botanical Garden and hope to see a tight finish at the end of the year :)

Hello Horia,
A very fine macro of E. viridulum with excellent technical and aesthetic qualities, especially the composition, sharpness and lighting.
This is a species that I would very much like to photograph in my area where it occurs but I have not found it yet.
Tfs this beauty,
All the best,
Ivan

Ciao Horia,
splendida macro, molto bella la composizione diagonale con la damigella inserita fra le due foglie, eccellenti POV e DOF, straordinaria definizione dei dettagli, bellissima luminosità.

Hello Horia!

Very good :-) Number 17, younger brother of mine red eyed Erythromma looks excellent. I'm also glad because I can ID this specie - I'm learning much about d-flies last days. Perfectly sharp and colorfull, nice deails on body and wings.

Thanks for your kind words my friend - I'll try to send few new species. And maybe I'll use my secret weapon... I hoped to use it today, but unfortunatelly it rains heavilly... Good luck in Croatia, I'm sure you won't waste your time and capture many interesting species!

BTW my next post will be with something big, not only in name :-)

hello Horia,

Wonderful, sharp exposure and excellent details.
The image is perfectly placed in the frame for a good, diagonal composition.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Horia,
Well done again. I guess you are right on track for gold in your competition.
You applied sharpening very well as this is a rather subtle insect. Furtheron composition-wise I like the diagonal you draw with your dragonfly. You are the undoubtedly the Phelps in the discipline 'flying with dragons':-)

Hi Horia,
Its brilliant capture, good colors, details and background. corner to corner placement of the dragon fly is great. but edge to edge could have been avoided, bit more space would have been a great. tfs.

Super and very good quality not only to the image but to your extensive notes...you really do a thorough job Horia. Your advances when you make them are like quantum leaps...keep on!
Bob

I think your challenge sounds like fun. Of course I personally would not be able to identify a single dragonfly but I certainly appreciate the fact that you can! You'll be able to put together a book by the end of the year!

This is another nice sharp full frame image with good color.
