[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here's a picture of what i really missed these past few months ;))

Being a reptile lover, i was left only with memories and paper-work ever since the cold came in November. Now, that the weather is constantly warm again i've seen some emerging from hibernation and resuming their active life...i can't wait to photograph them again :)

This is a picture i took last spring during one of the big trips - to Dobrogea (near the seaside).

As you can see from the shadows, the sun was quite low...that's because it was early morning :) This is the beauty of this particular place (Histria)...you'll find reptiles everywhere and at anytime :)

The specis is the Dice snake - Natrix tessellata - and here is some info on it:
Brief description
It is a European non-venomous snake belonging to the family of Colubridae, subfamily Natricinae.
Females are bigger than males. Maximum size is between 1.0-1.3 m long. The colour may vary from greyish green to brownish or almost black, with dark spots on the back. The belly is sometimes vividly coloured in yellow or orange, with black spots, very similar to a dice, hence the name.

Biology
It feeds mainly on fish, though lives mainly nearby river streams or lakes. Sometimes it feeds also on amphibians like frogs, toads and tadpoles.
This snake is not poisonous. As a defense it spreads a very bad smelling secretion from its cloaca. Another defence mechanism is tanatosis, meaning the snake is playing dead.
During the mating season (March-April-May) they congregate in large groups. Egg laying is usually in July and one clutch consists of 10-30 eggs. The young snakes hatch in early September.
Dice snakes hibernate from October to April in dry holes near the water.

Research projects
One of the most numerous population lives in the vicinity of the ruins of Histria (where this photo was taken), in Dobrogea region, Romania. This population has been recently discovered to be threatened by a parasitic nematode, namely Eustrongylides. Since 2005, the population from Histria has been in researchers' attention. The Tessellata project, a joint Romanian-Swedish-Czech research program, is focused on populational biology studies and parasitic threats of this unique costal population.

Hi Horia,
Great pose, light, animal and a clear demostration of the proverb: "There’s no accounting for taste" (De gustibus non est disputandum)
Best regards mf,
José M.

Hello Horia, It's nicely illuminated with the low angle producing a good balance of shadows and highlights, well composed good figure posed for you, both head and tail clearly visible. Snakes are difficult to photograph in my opinion Lots of camera shake usually :-) tfs rgds Necip.

Nice snake. Nice pose. Nice composition.
Would have been interesting to create a shade on the whole subject plus background. The details are a little lost in the hard lights and shadows.
You mentioned the maximal size of the specy. Would have been interesting to grossly mentioned too the approximal size of the one you met. Was this an adult?
Don't get me wrong because of hard criticisms. this is anexcellent capture.
TFS

Salut Horia,
Mi-ai adus aminte de Histria si de pasarile ei si de reptile....testoase, serpi, soparle...offf. Sper sa ajung si eu pe acolo anul asta desi nu vad cum...
Super poza. Compozitia si pozitia subiectului excelente!
TFS!!

Hello Horia,
Fine capture with good sharpness and composition of a species of snake new to me. But I can see clearly that thisis a Natrix species by the round pupil of the eye.
Personally I like this POV in order to see the whole snake.
Well done and TFS mf!
Best wishes, Ivan

excellent shot, horia! :-)
we do not have to many snakes here in cologne,
so it is very good to at least see them here
on TN. does it bite? *g* how close were you?
anyway, great pose you captured there,
seems it is just warming up a little in the
morning sun.
the harsh light and shadows may not be very
good for all the nice details but they create
this special atmosphere of the early morning.
well seen & done, thorsten.

Hi Horia.
The simplest point of this shot is its quality. It is outstanding. Pictured subject is very nice too: stone plate, grass, low long shadows and bright sunlight are expressive at high range. I like your POV so much. It is selected extremely exactly. Not lower, nor higher. Clearness of the shot, 3D-effect, fantastic sharpness and details are perfect sighs of perfect done job. BRAVO, my dear friend and TS.
Alexei.

Hello Horia,
Excellent capture.POV,pose of snake, clear details, sharpness and framing are wonderful.
TFS..:-)

Hello Horia!
Well I believe that soon new picture of reptiles will appear in you colection, so this is a good time for searching archive for "the last time" ;)
The snake is well know from your earlier photos but the note allow to learn a lot about this species even after watching all recently presented pictures.
On the other hand there are few things which are not perfect for me in this photo. The first is the BG. I know that sometimes it is not possible to take picture both in the wild and in natural place, and here is the example :) The second thing which I do not like are shadows on the snake's body make by plants occurring on the left. Unfortunatelly thanks to them body of Natrix does not look very good...
On the other hand I like a lot "ready for attack" pose of this reptile and nice details on its skin (the middle part of presentation).
Best greetings,
Radomir

Great shot Horia - we rarely see snakes in the UK - only three species and one of those only in a very restricted area.

The eye is quite amazing here.

James

Hi Horia,
What an interesting snake. A new one for me! A good expsoure shows the wonderful colors and patterns just as you describe them in your excellent notes. Great looking texture shown in the snake's skin. Well done!

Hello Horia,
not one of my favorite animals, but the capture is wonderful. The lighting is very nice and the snake poses very well on a background that shows it off quite well. Excellent sharpness and the details are very good.
Sky

This is a nice specie Horia that you captured with good details and exposure. I enjoyed those notes too especially about their mechanism defense and this research projects. Pose of the snake and this POV are well done too. This BG is not the nicest one but we don't always chose where are subject will be, especially in the wild :-) Well done and TFS,
Claudine

Hi Horia,
Excellent capture of this snake!
I like so much the POV and the close approach to the reaptile.
You catch a great pose, with all that folds on themselve, that had created a very good composition.
I like also the illumination and the exposure used.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Think reptile, think Horia :-)
I'm looking forward to see your reptile images...
Tanatosis... didn't know some snakes use this: I knew about Stork chics using it.
Well done
TFS
Annick

Hi Horia,
Nice and sharp, that eye is amazing. Well composed with natural color and good exposure..We have snakes here, but I rarely see em'
One time last year I was looking for anything I could find..Turning over rocks, old tin roof pieces, etc..Turned over a sheet of old galvanized metal and I found the mother of all rattlers (huge)..Before I could turn to get my camera behind me (on tripod), and turn back, it had vanished back into its hilly den :(
Well done mf.

Olá Horia

Ótima foto e aparente calma...boa composição, cores, luz e sombras.
Parabéns pelo trabalho Horia!

Abraços,
Vera.

Hello Horia,
Excellent capture with good detail, esp. the eye. You must be one of the rare reptile lovers on TN :). Having had sufficient number of encounters with rattlers, I sure am not one of them. TFS. Best wishes,
Hakan

Howdy Horia,

You had me going! I wondered how fast these snakes were coming out of hybernation! I have been watching bugs here... and none are yet ready to show! Tonight at midnight SPRING will officially begin... but today we had yet more snow! A quick flurry, but snow just the same! So your snake warming in the sun, is a real tonic! Tfs, Jay

PS I am glad this snake is not poisonous! For this one is too big to fool around with! And that evil eye!

Hi Horia,
Good to know that you are a snake lover and also a snake expert. Very nice close up on this Dice Snake. Sharpness and color clarity are great. I guessed this one is out for sun bathing.

Hello Horia,

Great picture of this snake.
Great sharpness, color and background.

Oz

I also like reptiles and although snakes and lizards are common in the UK, I rarely see them. They are very good at hiding themselves.
This is an excellent photo of the snake, I particularly like the warm light and long shadows, I guess it must be early morning or late afternoon. Your EXIF data says 22:51 which I find hard to believe!
The composition is perfcect. I suppose a narrower aperture would have been better, the foreground and part of the snake are blurred and in fact not the best quality.
