[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It is my first photo from Romania and I want to dedicate this collage to a great treknature photographer from Romania Horia Bogdan (horia)

There are two important things in those photos. All the shots are scans from a negative. Another thing is that I took those shots with a very simple analog Canon “idiotcamera”. All images are from July of 2002.

It is also quite amazing that this special place in Romania was photographed (on treknature) mostly by members from Poland (from my home town Lodz). Another funny thing is that I know all of them. There is only one not Polish photo of Romanian muddy vulcanoes and you can find it here

You can find Polish shots in galleries of: Grzesiek (red45) here, Radek (cicindela) here and Michal (cedryk) vulcano1, vulcano2, vulcano3, vulcano4.

Ionela, Grzesiek, Radek and Michal already did great notes about this place so this time only a short information.

The Muddy Volcanoes - Vulcanii noroiosi are a geological and botanical reserve located in the Berca commune in the Buzău County in Romania.
As the gasses erupt from 3000 meters-deep towards the surface, through the underground layers of clay and water, they push up underground salty water and mud, so that they overflow through the mouths of the volcanoes, while the gas emerges as bubbles. The mud dries off at the surface, creating a realatively solid conical structure, resembling a real volcano. The mud expelled by them is cold, as it comes from inside the Earth's continental crust layers, and not from the mantle.
The reservation is unique in Romania. Elsewhere in Europe, similar phenomena can be observed in Italy (northern Apennines and Sicily), Ukraine (in the Kerch Peninsula), as well as Azerbaijan.

The volcanic part is surrounded by a steppe with Stipa sp. a genus of around 300 large perennial hermaphroditic grasses collectively known as feather grass, needle grass, and spear grass. They are placed in the subfamily Pooideae and the tribe Stipeae.

Pozdrawiam serdecznie,
Jurek

Czesc Krzysiek!

Abrazo Krzy.

These are some amazing shots of defunct volcanoes in Romania, Chris.
You have covered the place from various angles, making it a significant document of great academic relevance.
Thanks for sharing the picture and info through your note.

Hi Krzysztof,
fascinating documents of a most impressive primordial landscape and a geological phenomenon that looks very exotic. I would not have expected it to be located in Europe.
All the pictures are well presented, they look precise and are showing well saturated natural colours, and they are giving a very good impression of this unique place. Nothing to be added, nothing to be cropped here.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter

Hejka!
Serdecznosci,
Radek

i am not so very into geology, but your collage really is amazing, Krzysztof! :-)
never heard about the muddy volcanos, but they look kind of like
the "pools" in yellowstone park in the USA.
so, learnt something new today, thank you for that and best wishes,
thor.
ps. the “idiotcamera” seems to have taken some good images anyway.
