Natrix natrix - common grass snake.
This is one of the most common and wide-spread species of snakes in Europe and Romania. It is a semi-aquatic species that normally feeds on frogs, toads, frog larvae and fish. The color patterns are highly variable, ranging from brown and olive to green and lines along the back. An easily recognizable feature is the two yellowish or whitish half-moon shapes behind the head.
This is a non-venomous snake and a very timid species. It will always try to run when faced and if not left alone it will spread a bad-smelling secretion that discourages most predators. The last resort in case of danger is playing dead, turning with its belly up and with the tongue sticking out of its mouth.
Its length ranges from 80cm to 1,2m in the case of the natrix subspecies and even to 2m in case of the helvetica subspecies.
It can be found in a high range of habitats, most commonly near temporary or permanent water pools, lakes or ponds, but it has been also reported in rocky areas and sand dunes (Danube Delta). It can climb to over 1000m in altitude. |
