First orchids

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
One of the first orchids flowering in Romania is Orchis morio. It is a member of the Orchidaceae family. The plant has two more or less round tubers that enable the early flowering. Flowers are grouped on a steam with leaves. Flowers color usually is dark purple but can also be violet, pink or rarely white.
This plant is protected in Romania but despite this it still can be found sold in the market places. It is the case of the flower from the photo. I bought it from the market place together with other spring flowers. This proves that protection measures in some areas are far from being effective and people with modest incomes still collect them for selling.
The photo of the flower has been made in natural light but the plant was not in it’s natural site. I tried to use the natural light to show the color tones of the flower but the photo itself do not represent the image of the flower in natural conditions. |
