[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Weather was bad with clouds hiding the sun and fog covering Tampa mountain’s pick. Despite all these temperature was pleasant and light smooth. I decided to go out for a walk.

Walking through the forest I was surprised to see how many Lamium plants were around. There were colored in red violet white and yellow. Due to the wet weather from last time plants were big with lot of flowers full of nectar.

The dominant sound was the low noise buzz of the bumblebees queens. Bumblebees are insects with social life. It is the queen that begins in spring to gather nectar and pollen in order to establish the new colony. Bumblebees are doing nests under ground and successful colony might have up to 250 members.

At a moment sun came out from clouds and lightened the wet plants and hungry insects. I decided to take a picture of the first bumblebee next to me.

It was a Bombus lucorum queen feeding on a Lamium flower. Bombus bumblebees are between the first to emerge in spring. Queens are 19-20 mm long and can be recognized after the yellow and white stripes on the blackbody. These bumblebees have a rather short tongue therefore they usually feed with flowers that have the nectar not deep inside. When flowers hide the nectar far down from the flower entrance bumblebees do not hesitate to bite a hole near the base of corolla drinking it.

As there are big insects and moving all the time it is difficult to get them in focus. But as I was lucky to get direct sun light and using a small aperture I could take this photo.
