Even this fragile birds, in the mating season, must to combat for the best nesting place. I spended few days near Saraturi Laka - protected area from Danube Delta -
watching the behaviour of the Black-winged Stilt. There are over a hundred pairs of Himantopus eating in the shallow water near de bank. Each pair has 20-30 metters of the bank where the birds are eating and sliping. Only the Black-winged Stilts know the limits of each area. Short fights between neighbours can be seen when someone breaks the edge. The fight is like a spacial dance, during 2-3 seconds, very fast, so I did not see if the fighters touch each other. I think that the fight is more symbolical because everitime nobody is hurt. |
