[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
While arranging my photos from previous year I found some that I liked. It was last summer coming back from the “Sapte Scari” canion in Piatra Mare mountains.

Trip was very nice but I was not able to find any interesting plants, insects or birds so I was a little disappointed. Suddenly in a small clearing, at the edge of the forest, I saw a blackberry bush nicely lighted by the afternoon sun and full of flowers. I realized that my attention was attracted by the many butterfly feeding on the flowers or flying around.

It was easy to go near the bush find a flower and wait for a butterfly to sit on it. So I could take some photos.

Butterfly feeding on the blackberry bush were Argynnis paphia, a common insect in our region. These butterfly are 59 – 76 mm bright and nicely colored. The adults of this species, living from plane till 1800 m height, are active from May till October. Eggs are layed on Viola palnts or on tree bark. After 15 – 18 days larvaes emerge and start feeding with Viola, Crategus and Urtica leaves. Over the winter larvaes hibernates.

Argynnis paphia has one generation in a year and is a protected butterfly in Europe.
