Grasshopper II (Acrida ungarica)
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Sulina, the most eastern town of Romania, has no roads to connect it with the rest of the country. Access is possible only by ship. Therefore there are relative few tourists in the summer time. The beach has several kilometers and not many people visit it. Therefore it looks natural in most of its parts.
While walking to the beach I met many grasshoppers jumping between the weeds. It was a larger one, about 8 cm in leangth, that drew my attention. Insect’s colors were very similar to those of the grasses growing in the sand. Grasshopper was difficult to observe and only its large dimension attract my attention.
I took some photos admiring the perfect camouflage of the insect. Despite its very particular shape of the head I was not able to identify it. Any help for ID should be appreciated.
P.S. Many thanks to Ivan (Argus) who identifyed the grasshopper as being Acrida ungarica. |

Hello Cristian,
These long, grass-shaped grasshoppers are difficult to photograph as they are always trying to hide themselves and this sharp capture was taken while it was trying to do that.
This is Acrida ungarica, aspecies that I have never seen myself as it is S. European and occurs as several sub-species.
TFS this interesting image,
Ivan

Hello Cristian,
I find these Grasshoppers fascinating - they're so well camouflaged in their environment. I expect you only discovered it by its movements. A fine capture well focussed on this slim insect. I'd love to see one of these one day!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla
