I've seen a lot of different and outstanding pictures of both mantids and dragonfly in the past few months since i've joined TN...but i've never seen a picture of both of them at the same time :)

I've taken this one in the same place as my previous mantis post, at that natural pond near the forest i've told you about. Unlike that post, this in more of an action shot, as you easily see. No need to feel sorry here, this is nature's way!

BTW, did you know that mantids are one of the few insects that can turn their heads? Or also that there are known to hunt mostly insects but also small vertebrates? (yes, rarely...but they do :))

Anyway, i hope you'll like it :)

A hair-raising moment depicting the "survival of the fittest" law, Horia. Yes, we adore both these insects in isolation, but this is a different "meeting" altogether.
Wonderful picture in the strong light that leaves nothing to imagination.
TFS and bye.

Hi Horia,
Great catch for the mantis and superb catch for you! Great sharpness and very neat image. Nicely composed. Great DoF.

Hallo Horia,
superb capture either way. Well composed and presented. Contrasts are rather hard due to strong light (coming from frontal/right). I tried a workshop but I'm only partially satisfied with the result.
Best wishes, Peter

These animals look frightening and must be a real horror for smaller insects. It seems to have started with the head. Maybe that's really tastefull?

WOW! ;-)
I've never seen mantid in reality. Unfortunatelly we don't have them where I live. I've seen some pictures of these creatures of course and this is one of most interesting. I guess it's not easy to catch a dragonfly, even for a mantid :-)
Apart from the great theme, the photo is also very good technically. I really like the POV and framing too.
VERY WELL DONE! :-)

Great moment captured.

Amazing scene and technically excellent photo!
Good composition and exposure. Colours look a little muted but that's just my personal preference.
Unusual to see the dragonfly being the hunted instead of the hunter!

that is some performance you get with the S2is...and i keep saying it...
this is so sharp and well composed as a real time situation..not just a pose on a branch..i can imagine the mantis is not static but munching away when you took this.. ASA 100..!! good!

Hello my Friend!
This time I decided to comment something from your archive :)
This is an amazing and rarely seen situation to take photo of mantis species eating a dragonfly! :) Really I have to say that you picture is the second I have even seen (the first was by cedryk who photographed such situation 3 years ago when we visited Montenegro - this picture in on PES web site and also here on TN).
Anyway, you were lucky to be in the right time and right place. :)
Best regards,
Radomir
