[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
These are lichen I found in my area and in Carska Bara wildlife reserve.The third one (largest image) grows on coniferus tree.

Lichen is not a single organism the way most other living things are, but rather it is a combination of two organisms which live together in simbiosis. Most of the lichen is composed of fungal filaments, but living among the filaments are algal cells, usually from a green alga or a cyanobacterium.

In many cases the fungus and the alga which together make the lichen may each be found living in nature without its partner, but many other lichens include a fungus which cannot survive on its own -- it has become dependent on its algal partner for survival. In all cases though, the appearance of the fungus in the lichen is quite different from its morphology as a separately growing individual.

Lichens are informally classified by growth form into:
* crustose (paint-like, flat), e.g., Caloplaca flavescens
* filamentose (hair-like), e.g., Ephebe lanata
* foliose (leafy), e.g., Hypogymnia physodes
* fruticose (branched), e.g., Cladina evensii, C. subtenuis, and Usnea australis
* leprose (powdery), e.g., Lepraria incana
* squamulose (consisting of small scale-like structures, lacking a lower cortex), e.g., Normandina pulchella
* gelatinous lichens, in which the cyanobacteria produce a polysaccharide that absorbs and retains water.

Bonsoir Tanya,
Très jolie présentation de ces végétaux si complexes et intéressants, auxquels bien de gens ne font pas cas. C'est très bien que tu nous les montres. Joliment présentées et mis en scène.

Hi Tanja
The different Lichen are so colourful. They each have a different and interesting pattern. You've captured the different Lichens very well. Interesting notes too.
