Pieris Brassicae

Widespread, very common and sometimes a pest.
The larva of this species can reach pest proportions, and decimate cabbages to the point that they become mere skeletons of their former selves. This species is particularly vulnerable to the parasite Apanteles glomeratus, a braconid that lays its eggs in young larvae. This butterfly normally has 2 generations each year, or 3 in good years when the conditions allow. This species is also known to migrate to the UK from the continent, augmenting the resident population in the process.
Foodplants
The main foodplant is Crucifers (various) (Cruciferae family (various)). Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) and Wild Mignonette (Reseda lutea) are also used.

This species is found in a wide variety of habitats and can turn up almost anywhere, including gardens, allotments, parks, meadows, open grassland, and hedgerows.

Eggs are laid either on the upper or lower leaf surface, in groups of 40 or so. Each egg is laid directly on the foodplant (rather than on top of other eggs) and also abuts other eggs, resulting in an organised egg mass. An individual female may lay up to 600 eggs in total. The eggs hatch in 4-17 days, depending on temperature.

The gregarious larva eats its eggshell on hatching. Unlike the other “cabbage white”, the Small White, the Large White larva prefers to feed on the outer leaves of the foodplant, whereas the Small White larva prefers to feed on inner leaves. There are 5 instars in total, and the fully-grown larva is approximately 45 mm long.

After wandering for some time, the larva finds a suitable pupation site that is typically away from the foodplant, such as fences, tree trunks, and under any overhang on a building, such as its eaves. The pupa is attached by a silken girdle and the cremaster. It is approximately 20mm in length. This species overwinters as a pupa.

The Large White has a powerful flight, as evidenced by its ability to migrate over large distances. It is one of the most widespread species, and a common sight in gardens throughout the Europe.

Hi Tanja,
What a moment!
You had a great timing in this shot, it's very good the pose of the butterflies caught.
Love all the white on its wings and the ribbing seen on it.
I found very appropriated the DOF used and the way it puts away the background.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Tanja.
You have reproduced these refined beautiful butterflies perfectly. Amazing tender shot by composition, pictured scene, delicate lighting and colour palette. Great detail reproduction and sharpness of the image (not soft and not crisp, exactly precise. My best wishes to you and your family.
Alexei.

Hi Tanja!
I do not know why I overlooked this picture before. Very nice and beauty photograph with very good DOF and colouration (even if Pieris is not very colourful species :>).
I even wolder if you agree for placing this picture in the PES gallery (the link you can easy find in my intro). Please let me know what do you think about that :)
