Araneus diadematus is one of the most common and best known orb weavers. It is easily identified by the distinctive white cross on the abdomen (although in some specimens it is indistinct or missing). This spider is most commonly called in England the 'garden spider', it is also known as the cross spider. They are common in woodlands, heathlands and gardens. They build circular orb webs and can be found either sitting at the center of the web with facing down or in a retreat at the end of a signal line a short distance from the web itself.
This spider is mature from summer to autumn and is usually at its largest in late Autumn when it is at its oldest and often full of eggs. After laying their eggs the females die and only the eggs and the spiders that hatched in spring that year will over winter.
Young spiders emerge from the egg sac in may but usually stay together until they are mature enough to leave. Spiderlings of Araneus diadematus are black and yellow and look almost identical to adults except for the markings.

Nothing better than a good spider shot .. and you sure have one here ,,, The blue sky makes a good background but I do wish the house od out of the picture.. still a nice shot

Hi Tanja,
Yes I think there surely is need for a comment :), or even some small critque :) on this photo.
First, and most important of all, the sharpness, DOF and exposure are awsome and can't be done better.
Secondly: Due to that awsome sharpness and exposure details are superb, and can't get any better.
In third place: The spider and it's prey, the wasp, do stand out perfectly against the background.
In forth place: And now it comes to a small critque, pityfull the background is a little distracting coused by the what I think is a building at the left side.
In this case it would have been better if you had done a small step to the left to loose that building out of the viewfinder and get more of the tree in the image.
Nevertheless this is a great macro image at wich it is a real joy to look at.
Thanks for sharing and the excellent note
Kindest regards,
Harry

Hello Tanja,
the spider is well captured by you, well focused and with good sharpness. Light is well managed here. Perhaps, a slightly different point of view would have avoided to the building in the background.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Tanja,

Great nature action shot. Also common in Romania, known by people under the name "Spider with the cross". Beautiful details on both the spider and the wasp, given by the perfect focusing and DOF.

Cheers, Petru

Hi
Great dramatic moment :-) I like the composition. Sharpnes and DOF is good.

And I like the special horror movie mood.
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Hi, dear Tanja.
I think. this is really outstanding shot at any respect (and my new favorite picture). Reproduction of the spider and its prey is amazing. Terrific details, 3D-image, tremendous colours (including the sky coloration), wonderful light and superb vertical composition. DOF is great too. Bravo and my congratulations.
Alexei.

Bonjour Tanja
Excellente prise, superbe, couleurs, netteté
Félicitations

Oh, my goodness Sily,
What a picture! Excellent sharpness to show this garden spider and its victim. Nice to have taken the picture with the blue sky behind. Just the same remark like the others concerning the house on the left.
Beat regards
Anne

Wow, that is so amazing!!!! I just love the spider
with his "lunch bag". The design looks like African batik cloth on the spider body! perfect! One of my favorite spider pictures for all time!
