The upperside of the red admiral butterfly is black with white spots near the wing tips. The forewing has a red band across the middle, and the hindwing has a red band along the edge. The red admirals that are born during the winter are smaller and duller, while the ones that live during the summer are larger and brighter. Their wing span is from 1 3/4 - 3 inches (4.5 - 7.6 cm).
The larva of the Red admiral feeds on Nettles, they tend to be fairly solitary in this stage of their development. For defensive purposes they use silk to close a leaf which they can then feed on in relative safety.
Red admirals butterflies prefer sap flows on trees, fermenting fruit, and bird droppings. They visit flowers only when their other foods are not available. Then they will drink nectar at common milkweed, red clover, aster, and alfalfa, among others.
Red admiral butterflies prefer moist woods, yards, parks, marshes, seeps, and moist fields. During migrations, these butterflies are found in almost any habitat from the tundra in Canada to subtropic countries near the equator. |

Hi Tanja.
(It is pleasant to me to write and pronounce this name. This one is a name of my sister)
Very nice close-up. You have shown this charming butterfly in all its beauty. Great colours and details. I think the BG decorates this picture very well. My compliments.
Alexei.
