Hoverfly

Probably female.
Dietrich (meyerd) says it's Metasyrphus corollae and he is probably right because it looks so similar,
but there is very large numer of them (about 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described) and all kinds of variations so here's something about them:

It is thought that this mimicry protects hover flies from falling prey to birds and other insectivores which avoid eating true wasps because of their sting. However a flower fly and a wasp can be distinguished by counting the wings: the flies have two wings, and the wasps and bees have four. They can also be distinguished by simply looking at the head: if it looks like a fly's head, then it is likely a fly.
The adults feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods.
Hover flies got their name from their characteristic flight pattern of hovering nearly still, then darting a short distance very rapidly only to start hovering again, a pattern not seen in the wasps and bees they mimic.

Hi Tanja, wondefrful macro, great details, splendid colors and optimal focus, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Tanja,
The name of the photo is so appropiate, that's exactly what this fly seems to be thinking about and thus posing.
I like POV used here, the close approach and details got.
Congratulations, thanks for share and best regards,
JM

Hello Tanja,
I like the way you've captured this one! Good focus on the eyes and the blurred wings look good against the orange background. Nice composition!
TFS, Ulla

Dear Tanja
I like this shot of a fly because of it's unusual compsition seen from front on a wooden substrate.

You are very close with the determination Dasyrphus, female. What worries me is the lack of a dark mark in the wing and the brown, not very dark pro-mesonotum. So I offer an alternative: Metasyrphus corollae (no guarantee!).

Cheers, Dietrich

Hi Tanja.
Your macro pictures are becoming more and more better. I also like your selection pf the POV and captured scenery. They are very unusual and impressive. Lighting, brightness of colours are perfect too as well as the crisp sharpness and details (DOF as we can see is excellent). It is very difficult to identify the species of hoverfly. The number of species is great. You are right. I know too that this is female.
Superb done and my compliments.
Alexei.

Espero interpretes mi crítica constructivamente y te ayude a continuar mejorando tus presentaciones.
Cordialmente... Ricardo

I coincide with the appreciation of Alexei Tanja about the quality of your macros that they go improving gradually.
But for it, it is also necessary to be critical to learn of our opinions.
The point of view is very good, showing interesting details of the insect included of one of eyes for the captured illumination.
They are also perceived with sharpness the formations of their wings and the produced shade offers an aesthetic effect.
Only the negative point is the frmaing too much centered, deepened by the monotony of the bottom.
I hope you interpret my critique constructively and helps you to continue improving your presentations.
Cordially... Ricardo

Hi Tanja

Did you actually hear the hoverfly ask you the question, "Are you talking to me?" or did you just improvise on its behalf? Seems like there might really be some Dr. Doolittle type characters abound or are you just being 'silly' as your user ID suggest (chuckle, just pulling your leg). This is a lovely fly and I am glad that it seems like you got the ID pinned down.

The composition and POV are fine. The colours are natural and the details are very clear. The BG surface might be a little bright, but at least the insect stands out well against it.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
