The Black Crowned Crane (Balearica pavonina) is a bird in the crane family Gruidae. It was once called also Kaffir Crane.

It occurs in dry savannah in Africa south of the Sahara, although in nests in somewhat wetter habitats. There are two races, B. p. pavonina in the west, and the more numerous B. p. ceciliae in east Africa.

This species and the closely related Grey Crowned Crane, B. regulorum, which prefers wetter habitats for foraging, are the only cranes that can nest in trees. This habit, amongst other things, is a reason why the relatively small Balearica cranes are believed to closely resemble the ancestral members of the Gruidae.

Like all cranes, the Black Crowned Crane eats insects, reptiles, and small mammals. It is endangered, especially in the west, by habitat loss and degradation.

great colors good focus good composition.

Hi Stefan,
a nice picture with nice colours and very good details,
they DOF is good too, the bird is well seen from the BG.
But the picture is a bit underexposed, the details in the shadows are not seen. IMO it's to tight cropped, it need a bit more space to left and even if the feet are hidden it's a good idea to let us imaging that we can see them by add a wee bit more space. Otherwise it's a nice picture and I like.
A belated Welcome to TN.

Hello Stefan,
Nice color and good exposure, detail, and profile POV. I like the small white flowers and green plants FG I see..I would say that the overall vertical composition is good, but it needs a bit more space in front & behind IMHO.
Have a great week & Thank You!

Hi, Stefan.
Nice bird. Good exposure, details and sharpness. Lovely colors.

Stefan this is superb the detail and composition is perfect Lovely DOF great advantage of 5D fullframe. Best rgds Necip.

Hello Stefan,
Wonderful portrait of this bird!
Great POV used to catch, with great details, all the beauty of their colors and the gorgeous plumage, specially on the yellow-orange ones at the head.
Very good color saturation.
I like the vertical composition and the frame used, my only observation would be the crop of the tail.
Anyway, congratulation for this picture, thanks for share and best regards,
JM

This is a really beautiful capture!
A magnificent animal presented with plenty of rich and very well saturated colors!
I love the details and on the feathers here and also the exceptional contrast with the BG.
