[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
is a term applied not to a distinct mineral species, but to an aggregate of various forms of silica, chiefly chalcedony.

According to Theophrastus, the agate (achates) was named from the river Achates, now the Drillo, in Sicily, where the stone was first found.
Most agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas where they represent cavities originally produced by the disengagement of volatiles in the molten mass which were then filled, wholly or partially, by siliceous matter deposited in regular layers upon the walls. Such agates, when cut transversely, exhibit a succession of parallel lines, often of extreme tenuity, giving a banded appearance to the section. Such stones are known as banded agate, riband agate and striped agate.

Agate beliefs

In many traditions agate is believed to cure the stings of scorpions and the bites of snakes, soothe the mind, prevent contagion, still thunder and lightning, promote eloquence, secure the favour of the powerful, and bring victory over enemies. Persian magi are also known to have prized agate rings in their work and beliefs.

Hi Marjan

What an original post!
I really like the colors and the patterns here on this beautiful section!
The layers are indeed so well visible.
Good sharpness and exposure, nice lighting and DOF, too.
A very good informative note, as well.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Marjan

I’m not much of a ‘rock’ man, but I know something ‘beautiful’ when I see it. Also your notes are very interesting, useful, and instructive.

The colours of the layered patterns are stunning, the details were well captured, and the exposure was spot on. The only slight nit IMHO might be the flares of bright light beside the rock which is slightly distracting to the eye. Since it is an evenly coloured dark BG you should have considered to clone those out of the photo as I don’t think anybody would have objected too much in this case.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Marjan,
this is a very nice picture. The colours and pattern on the subject is wonderful and if the BG would complete dark this had been a reall wallhanger, pity about the hot spots.
Beautiful work, my friend.

Ciao Marjan, wonderful mineral, amazing colors, interesting note, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Marjan, yesterday I visited "Crystal Mountain" in Auckland and saw many of these Agates and other intetesting stones. And after seeing your picture here, I think I will post some of what I saw one day too.
This Agate is very impressive, and you show it well, thank you for sharing
Janice
