Italian name: Merlo Acquaiolo

To take this picture I've been to Triglav National Park (Slovenia) about 3 hours drive from my home near Venice (Italy).
It's a juvenile subject, adult is brown with white-throated.
It's quite confident but you have to go inside the white water to approach it.
And the water is FROZEN!! Just coming down from the glacier!
I hope you enjoy my effort to let you know this bird not so common in Italy.

It's an aquatic passerine bird found in Europe and the Middle East, also known as the European Dipper or just Dipper. The species is divided into several subspecies on colour differences, especially of the pectoral band.

The Dipper is a rotund, short-tailed bird, dark above and white-breasted, closely associated with swiftly running rivers and streams or the lakes into which these fall. The Dipper often perches bobbing spasmodically with its short tail uplifted on the rocks round which the water swirls and tumbles.

It acquired its name from these sudden dips, not from its diving habit, though it dives as well as walks into the water.

It flies rapidly and straight, its short wings whirring swiftly and without pauses or glides, calling a shrill zil, zil, zil. It will then either drop on the water and dive or plunge in with a small splash.

From a perch it will walk into the water and deliberately submerge, but there is no truth in the assertion that it can defy the laws of specific gravity and walk along the bottom. Undoubtedly when entering the water it grips with its strong feet, but the method of progression beneath the surface is by swimming, using the wings effectively for flying under water.

Bonjour Andréa,
Très jolie photo !
J'aime la poésie qui se dégage de cette photo.
La PDC (DOF) est bien choisie, l'oiseau se détache bien du fond. Belle lumière. Les petites herbes ajoutent à la finesse de la photo.
Une accentuation peut-être un peu trop forte en post-traitement et j'aurais fait disparaître les 2 petites tâches (en haut et devant l'oiseau).

what a lovely picture, the colour is spot on, the light on moss gives it an almost velvet look,sharp and perfect focus as usual, an ideal resting island for this dipper.

The good saturated colours in good light conditions makes this pleasing a picture to look at. Again a sharp picture from you as usual. Well done! It is also pleasing to read your informative note.
