Schizophyllum commune

***
It is probably the most widespread fungus in existence, being found on every continent except Antarctica, where there is no wood to be used as a substrate. There is a single common worldwide species, although there are a few less common species of Schizophyllum. The genus name means "split gill," and thus this is the split gill fungus. It does not appear to be very closely related to the other gilled mushrooms, and most researchers place it in its own order the Schizophyllales. The gills function to produce basidiospores on their surface. They appear to be split because they can dry out and rehydrate (and thus open and close) many times over the course of a growing season. This is a great adaptation for a climate with sporadic rains. Unlike other mushroom species, the mycelium only has to produce one set of fruiting bodies per year, which can then dry out and rehydrate and keep functioning. It's a great strategy for reproduction.” ... more in the interesting article of Tom Volk ... http://tomvolkfungi.net/

Have a nice weekend and best greetings from Lodz!

Hola Maite.

Nice collage work.
Excellent colors and details.

What a sumptuous colony of these mushrooms on the tree trunks, Maite!
I guess it must be dangerous to eat them because they might give you "Schizopherenia"! Ha,ha, ha!
A well seen and capably captured view of this fungi. I think I have seen this or a similar species growing on rotten wood in the Himalayan region.
TFS and best regards.

Hello Maite,
These sombreros are tough to photograph in the woods. You got around the exposure problem fine keeping sufficient detail on the fungi. Excellent pov that shows the colony. Best wishes,

Hi, Maite.
I like your very interesting note and nice picture-collage. You have presented these fungi perfectly. Clearness of the colours and transparency of the shots are excellent as well as the great details and fantastic DOF (I mean left picture). Difficult white colour reproduction is great too. Superb done and TFS.

Hola Maite,

Hola Maite,
While browsing Your gallery, this fantastic image immediately caught my attention. First of all it's a fungus, secondly I love collages (uploaded quite a few to TrekLens). These are 2 very nice shots with perfect exposure and sharpness, used in a clever way + framed and signed very tastefully. Simply a masterwork.
Muchas gracias por compartir - also for the useful note. Saludos, László
