The population of the Slender-Billed gull (Larus genei) in the Peninsula is scanty, though its association during the reproduction with other gulls can make it pass unnoticed. In the marshes of the Guadalquivir it produces among Pagazas Piconegras's colonies, but they exist besides, in Spain other places where it reproduces anually, though in scanty number.
This gull produces in great number on the coast of Mauritania and, probably, the majority of those who are seen in winter on the coasts suratlánticas of Iberia they belong to that colony.
The white head and the thin peak and of dark red almost black color, they distinguish it immediately from the Laughing Gull.
Identification: Gull of average size, it has the back of the wings of pale gray color and the rest of the white pure body, which in the low parts is spotted with a tenuous pink dye. The peak is of red very dark color, distantly it seems to be black, and the legs are of a red color dark coral. In winter the pink color of the low parts scarcely is estimated unless the bird is observed of closely together.
Nest building: Nest in land, in a shallow depression lined with rushes, herbs and feathers; it makes from 2 to 3 whitish eggs spotted with quoit, the incubation, not very verified it can range on 25 days, the chickens are nidífugos and only it does an annual putting.
Nourishment: aquatic Invertebrates and litttle fishes; also it feeds in land.
Habitat: Marshes and marshy zones. |

That is a beautiful gull with a very unusual beak. Great shot. The details are sharp, the exposure and composition are excellent. I like the way it seems to be looking down at its own reflection in intense fascination. Well-done.
