[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a female Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus)

She is running after an insect on the surface of the water but most of her feeding is done by probing her bill into the mud under the surface of the shallow water to look for insect larvae and worms.

The male has more black on the head and neck.

Black-winged Stilts are fairly common in S. Europe where there are stretches of shallow water and safe areas for them to breed. A few are resident around the Mediterranean but most spend the winter in tropical Africa.

They are also distributed across Asia and into Oceania.

This was taken at a distance of about 12 meters from a hide. I have taken closer shots of this species with better sharpness and detail but this is more interesting IMHO.

After fairly heavy cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

I can see her on the starting line. Actually - that beak would be more handy on the finishing line I think.
Good action shot Ivan. She looks so good and I love those pink stockings
Go New Zealand!
Janice

A prize action shot, Ivan. Your caption made me laugh :-)!
The three predominant colours on the bird are very well recorded and make it a very beautiful composition.
Thanks for sharing it and warm regards.

Hallo Ivan
I really like this one. Not only the image but also the title, as it is most appropriate. Greaaaaaaaat stuff!
You have captured this long legged Stilt in a beautiful in action freeze frame pose. Colours of the bird are displayed wonderfully in contrast with the colour of the water. Even at the distance you have taken this shot, the flashlight in the eye is well seen. This guy surely is a winner and I am sure it will pass the winning line with no effort at all. Thanks for sharing this great entertaining scene. A top of the pops photograph! I thank you kindly for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Ivan

Commenting or criticing on your pictures is not easy as it is flawless and moreover a offence by me.this is stunning sharp and the title is also best fit here.
Thanks

Hej Ivan
Nice action shot of this Black-winged Stilt. I have seen many of them in Spain and even photographed during their fight. This one is still good considering your heavy crop.

Ha ha Ivan. Rightly chosen title for shot. Sharp image with perfect exposure. I like the beak and red eye of this pleasant crop image. Excellent delivery and very well done. Regards. Jusni

Hi Ivan.
Wonderful pictured moment and timing. Exposure of a contrast beauty is precise. You managed to deflect both black and white tones perfectly. I also like wide DOF, attractive reproduction of the waves and attractive small sun spot in the bird's eye. Well done and my compliments.

Hi Ivan
A great pose showing perfectly the way the legs of this species have evolved to such an extraordinary length. Amazing how the tendons and muscles work in a leg so thin. Well exposed, especially when you consider the contrast of the plumage.
Kind Regards
Vinny

Hi Ivan,

I wonder if she will make it for opening ceremonies tomorrow! A wonderful shot of this Stilt almost walking on water. I love the position of the leg. Excellent black and white and a wonderful sparkle in her eye.

Jane

Olympic bird Water-Walking...cool. Working from a hide must be a mix of fun and patience. I have recently read about these from another member. From the results here, so clear and obviously close-in...it was worth the effort. that is some serious nature capturing Ivan. It is a great show-out for the canon and your eye!
Bob

Hello Ivan,

You are right about the interesting shot. The running pose really makes this stand out from the rest. She would make a good competitor for the hop, skip and jump!
The plummage details are finely recorded.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Ivan

Lovely capture and terrific title, too :))
This Black-winged Stilt could definitely outrun most humans :))

Excellent shot with very nice sharp details, an excellent side POV and natural contrast that emphasizes the bird even better from the photo.
Your timing is also impeccable - catching it with one leg up - and thus making the picture a bit funny, too.
Well seen, captured and presented.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Ivan,
Content-wise a very good image of course. Excellent note and identification as well. The highlights are a bit blown. A minor nit.
