Red-knobbed Coot - Fulica cristata

Another bird capture from our week on Mallorca. We were lucky to get close to this Crested Coot with her offsprings that had obviously become tame by visitors feeding them (which, in fact, is not allowed!). However, they still seemed to prosper and we had the chance to watch the mother and her three chicks very closely for some time. These two kept close to their mum and got plenty of food from her while the third one wandered off on its own!

It is a species easily mistaken for the Common Coot as the two red knobs are most obvious during the breeding season. Also the bill of the Crested Coot has a bluish tint as shown here.

This is a rare species in Europe where it is only found in the south of Spain. It has been introduced to Mallorca where it seems to thrive in the lagoons of the Albufera nature reserve next to the dense urbanisation of Alcudia.

Hence if rare then even more so when you get young and old together in one image...How nice that is for you and for others who are studying this particular species. They couldn't have picked a nicer person to follow! Fine lesson Ulla!

Hi Ulla.
Step by step I am watching your nice pictures. I have met and photographed adult specimen of the species but never seen their babies. They are charming and very touching. I am amazed with transparency of the image and clearness of the colours. Sunlight and shadows are very impressive as well as unusual and fine colour palette. Sharpness is terrific (you know I like sharp images most of all). My warm greetings and TFS.
Alexei.
