Little Egret - Egretta garzetta

On Mallorca we stayed at Porto Pollensa which is a relatively quiet and very beautiful place to be. A very long beach stretches along the resort with beautiful sand, pebbles and flowers. At the inlet of some little streams waders gathered and this is where I saw this Little Egret at a distance landing on the sandy beach by the water’s edge. I approached it slowly and then saw how it suddenly caught a big fish that it gulped down very quickly. (See WORKSHOP where I posted a pretty poor capture!) I moved closer but it noticed me and jumped up on the rocks where I got this shot before it flew off.

"The adult Little Egret is 55–65 cm long with an 88–106 cm wingspan. It weighs 350–550 grams. Its plumage is all white. It has long black legs with yellow feet and a slim black bill. In the breeding season, the adult has two long nape plumes and gauzy plumes on the back and breast. The bare skin between the bill and eyes becomes red or blue. Juveniles are similar to non-breeding adults but have duller legs and feet. The subspecies garzetta has yellow feet and a bare patch of grey-green skin between the bill and eyes, whereas nigripes has yellow skin between the bill and eye and blackish feet.

Little Egrets are mostly silent but make various croaking and bubbling calls at their breeding colonies and produce a harsh alarm call when disturbed.
Its original breeding distribution was large inland wetlands and coastal wetlands in warm temperate parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. It is a species that is apparently spreading around the world.” Extract from Wikipedia

This was captured from a distance of about 15 metres (49,21 feet) with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened and I’ve adjusted the levels.

Hi Ulla

A great shot - good composition and POV with good colour - some detail lost in crop? Well observed and captured.

James

Hello Ulla , good exposured whites , good comp. TFS .

Hullo Ulla,
That backdrop of hardy rocks provide such a fine contrast with the soft contours of the Egret, which is nicely frozen in a typical stance, in good focus and exposure. The lighting is not exactly favourable, but still provided enough illumination for even the shaded areas. Thanks for sharing this, and cheers my friend.

Hi Ulla,

This fellow now lives around the muddy shores of Southern England as well but I have never seen it in an environment like this. Very good capture, good composition, sharp details and nice BG. Shame that the other shot was not closer, amazing action.

Hi Ulla. We have Egrets on the river in my home town and they dont like people to close to them. I do like to watch them with thier big yellow feet. You have captured this one just in time before he flew off. good detail with a typical pose. well done TFS.
Nick..

hello Ulla, great capture, the details are excellent, the white is a bit soft, but the overall composition is first rate. TFs, regards h

It look so fragile against those rocks..more like boulders...weigh? wow! this really adds a dynamic, having the background as such with title and small bird which as opposed to a Robin is actually quite large..Very nice Ulla!

Hi Ulla,

A wonderful shot of this Little Egret, the hard works in the background give an interesting texture to the image, well framed and exposed.

Cheers Rick :)

A successful snap shot, Ulla.
I can see the Egret is about to take off and you have got it just in the nick of time.
At shutter speed 1/1000, some noise is expected in the shaded areas, but that is insigificant because the subject as a whole is very well captured.
I like the rocky background in this picture.
TFS and regards.

Hi Ulla,
you must have been quite close to this Egret! I've seen glimpses of them a mile off but that's just about it :-)

Very well composed capture and a great POV.
The lighting is perfect and you've exposed the whites very well.
Good focusing and DOF.
There seems to be a loss in quality and some distortion in a few of the corners... is this because of the teleconverter?
There is quite a lot of detail still though.
Nice work!
Well done!

Lovely shot...interesting pose here. What a beautiful bird!

Hello My beloeved friend Ulla,
Lovely and splendid shot of this beautifull little egret. Also a significant capture in WS showing its feeding my friend.
Many thanks for sharing and best regards,
Bayram

Hello Ulla,

What an elegant bird the egret is!
You have captured this beautifully in your shot. There is some noise evident but that does not detract from the beauty of this bird found in a very unusual setting!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Good show Ulla. It's not 100% sharp, but it's not easy from that distance. And the WS showing the fish is very interesting to see too.

Hi Ulla

I liked your notes, but it just shows that Gert is better of sitting in his hide and waiting for the birds to come to him. Somehow we are not as successful in stalking these birds as they are in stalking their prey. Anyway, thanks for the supplement material in the workshop. It helped to paint and give colour to the story you told. Just a pity this one got away before you had the opportunity to catch some more exposures of it, but that's what makes nature photography so difficult and also so interesting, because there is always another day to try it again and hopefully get a better shot.

With the light towards this bird's back it unfortunately gave you a bit of the dark side to its face, but you still managed to capture enough detail so one can see its eye and beak clearly. Actually one can see the bird taking the step as it makes a hasty retreat so you have also captured some nice movement in the shot. The rocks served as a great BG to isolate the bird.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
