[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Just at sunrise I walked up the famous Bocquer valley in the NE of Mallorca. It is well known for birds of passage during the spring.

Half an hour later when the sun began to shine on the opposite side of the valley, I heard a Cirl Bunting ( Emberiza cirlus ). The song is nothing remarkable: just a two-tone trill, each phrase lasting little more than a second, but it helped me to locate him.

The WORKSHOP shows him singing in the bush.

There he sat on the top of the bush and I longed to take a decent shot of him. I moved slowly towards him but the nearer I approached him, the more of him became hidden by the leaves. He must have seen me but he was either not afraid or could not make me out so well because of the dawn light and I was able to take this at a distance of about 8,00 meters (26 ft). In previous attempts to photograph this species elsewhere they flew off before I could get close enough.

The Cirl Bunting is resident and sparsely distributed in SW Europe, in countries along the N. Mediterranean and S. England. It occurs mostly in open bushy areas.

This was taken with the camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened.

Hello Ivan,
A beautiful species I have not seen before, so thank you for the education. Your images here are both superb and show this beautiful bird off extremely well. When I first saw it I thought it looked like a cross between a sparrow and a horned lark. Thanks for sharing this Ivan.

Hej Ivan
Cool shot of this Cirl Bunting. It is always good to listen a round and on that way found birds. I am learning to listen Swedish birds which I found very helpful.
Well done and TFS

Sommaren är på väg tillbaka

There are some similarities in marking and designs with the house sparrow...and perhaps size-wise as well. I do see some very distinct differences however. Especially around the eyes where there is a yellowish colour to the feathers. And considering the likeness, the saturation of sparrows is ironically high as compared your aviary which you say is somewhat sparse in population. an interesting lesson today Mr Ivan sir!

Hi Ivan,

I think this is the first Cirl Bunting I have seen. He has such unusual colors - the head and the plummage don't really go together. This chubby little bird is posing so nicely and of course, good colors and details. I like the workshop with him singing too. I have a thing for singing birds.

A very nice picture, Ivan, I love the colours, the feeling of dawn is in this light, there is this shiny atmosphere, clear and cristal, felt in the morning. Maybe is it the feeling of Mallorca?!!! It is superb and your approach allowed you to be very close and get a beautiful picture. Thank you Ivan, it is superb,

Francine

Hello Ivan

Just marking the post for now

Rob

Having seen your workshop too, I must compliment you for doing a great job that early in the morning and that too from a sizable distance, Ivan.
The bird with its fluffed up feathers seems to be warming up for the day.
From this perspective, you captured its plumage and catchlight in the eye very effectively.
TFS and regards.

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Ivan.
You managed to picture a very cute bird. I have never met this species. Its pose and state of mood are so attractive. Colours palette of the shot is very nice and pleasant. Especially I like colour tone of the BG. Some extremely blurred object n the FG are distractive a little bit but shot is looked very naturally and I like it a lot. My best regards and TFS.
Alexei.
