Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata)
Swedish name: Kragtrapp

This is a new species for TN

Two of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote and the neighbouring Fuerteventura are famous among birdwatchers for the occurrence of the Canary Islands race fuerteventurae of the Houbara Bustard. This bird is threatened by falcon hunting in N. Africa and by habitat destruction on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura where it is protected.

Apart from housing developments, the greatest threat is the use of four-wheel drive vehicles on its semi-desert habitat, a pastime that has become popular among tourists. There are notices to discourage people to disturb them, the idea being that only goats and goatherds are allowed to go on the areas where they are found.

There are only a few pairs on Lanzarote, most of them being found in Fuerteventura. The nominate species occurs in the semi-desert areas of N. Africa.

Needless to say this relatively small bustard (65 cm or 26 in.) is very shy. I took this from the car at about 60 meters (65 yards). When I tried to get closer he crouched down and disappeared, blending with his environment. I took a shot of him before he disappeared (see WORKSHOP).
This was taken in the morning light

Here the habitat looks relatively green, but it was only a ridge of vegetation, the rest being a plain of semi desert with sparse growth, though the area is in the northern part of the island where there is a little more rain and mist from the Atlantic.

We were hoping to come across one closer to our car but only saw this individual. Considering the distance and its effect on the quality of this image I still thought it was worth posting as this species is rather special.

After heavy cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened. As this bustard was taken on a ridge the BG was blurred when this was taken.

Recently a sub-species occurring in the Middle East and Central Asia was made a separate species, C. macqueenii and there is one fine image of this species on this site.

Hello Ivan,
Excellent capture of this Bustard in beautiful light. I like the posing and details are sharp and colours very nice.
Best regards Siggi

Hi Ivan,
Wonderful capture of this species I've never seen before..
It's very nice to see it here for the first time...
Very well composed...

Hi Ivan,
Very good capture of this Houbara Bustard considering the distance and the lense you had. Harsh sunlight is also affecting the picture. Even with these difficulties you have nice sharp details, reasonable contrast and colours; the habitat is natural.

Wow, what a great photo of this Bustard. It's not easy to get this close and you normally need a hide or something. What time of day was it?
Congratulations to a TN first!

Regards/Bengt

Hi My Friend Ivan,
Great capture of this strange and camouflaged coloured bird whişch is novelty for me. Great composition, details and splendid colours.
TFS this fine image my friend!
Cheers,

Hallo Ivan,

its quite certainly a once-in-a-lifetime event to see a "Kragentrappe" that close, in full, and a particular race to boot. The shot you took may not be perfect but it is still impressive considering the distance, the shyness of the steppe bird. You could certainly not wait for the "best moment". Great shot. Needless to say that I am envious.

Best regards
Dietrich

Hi Ivan

Great results for 60m, I'm impressed by tshallow DOf at that distance and the amount of plumage detail you were able to retain. Great work.

Hi İvan
very good sharp and detail
very nice composition
well done.

I have heard of the Great Indian Bustard but never seen one with my own eyes, Ivan.
I am quite unfamiliar with some of the birds and Bustard species is one of them.
This Bustard you shot in Spain has a somewhat comic appearance and you have managed a good shot despite the distance and the bird's shyness.
Your note gives me a good insight into characteristics of this bird.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Ivan,
very worthy image, thanks for this lovely and rarely seen bird image. its nice to see these kind of images sometimes. you have utilized the oppurtunity very well. the notes are very useful. tfs.

VERY good work on the dof...was this as is or did you have to gear it up a bit? either way tis of only import in that I use a program for PP which can do this very easily and at times it comes in real handy...as this...I would have done same...had my eye not been able to do it in the filed...

Hello Ivan,
Congratulations on your first photo of this C. undulata on TN. According to Avibase this species can be found on the Canary Islands, North Africa and SW Asia. The C. macqueenii indeed in the Middle East and C. Asia.
In spite of the heavy crop, this is a very good photo in excellent sharpness and details. Nice camouflaged colours and a good composition.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Ivan,

Congratulations on this first on TN - it's a first for me too and it's always thrilling to meet a new species. You were so lucky to come across this Bustard and to get such a good shot of him. Even from a distance you managed good colors and details. He seems to have very ornate plummage and is that a yellow eye? The workshop shows how well he is camouflaged in his natural environment. A most interesting post.

Jane

Ciao Ivan,
TFS.
Maurizio

Hi Ivan,

A strange looking bird with perfect camouflage pattern and colouration Ivan, your selectively sharpening procedure was very succesful here, resulting in a fine image from a difficult situation. TFS this rare sight my friend.

Merhaba Dostum Ivan,
Gerçekten daha önce varlığından bile haberdar olmadığım ve sitede başka örneği olmayan harika bir kuş karesi postalamışsın. O kadar mesafeye rağmen ayrıntılar çok başarılı. Emeğine sağlık.

Hello Ivan,
This special bird seems to have the right plumage for this dry environment. Amazing that you have seen it from 60m! It seems to me that it also has quite an unusual shape. Interesting posting, always happy to see some new creature on TN.

p.s How sharp would you say the 300mm + 1.4x is? Is it good for in-flight bird shots?

hello Ivan

excellent shot of the Houbara Bustard, with fine low POV
at the level of the bird, also fine framing,
and excellent sharpness and details, TFS

Hi Ivan,
i was drawn to this Bustard as we have just had some Great Bustards reintroduced here in the UK, on Salisbury Plain after many years of absence. This is very sharp for such a distance, with an excellent DOF too...great shot and another valuable contribution to TN.
Paul

Hello Ivan,
Great focus, exposure, POV, and detail, with the bustard standing out well in your frame. I bet you wish you had more time from your trip to Spain :)
Nice work from 60m,
Well done!
Howard

merhaba Ivan
This is perfect capture for Houbara Bustard as like one in my dream. Unfortunately, this species was extinct in Turkiye. So, I have not seen it. You are lucky to see it and capture with wonderful shot. Thanks for sharing this beauty. teşekkürler dostum. iyi geceler.
