Timanfaya National Park

The landscape of most of the island of Lanzarote is quite unique, but at the same time typical for an island that has had a number of volcanic eruptions in during the last centuries.

As there is very little rainfall the volcanoes are bare with very little if any vegetation.

The most violent and extensive occurred between 1730 and 1736 with the production of some 30 new volcanoes over an area of 51 sq. km. In the same area further eruptions in 1824 created some new craters. This area occupies about 25 % of the total area of the island and was made into a national park. Visitors can see evidence of hot lava just a few meters below the surface when a ranger throws a bucket of water down a hole. The resulting spurt of superheated steam gushes high into the air like a man-made geyser and some spots are too hot to walk on.

This was taken from a lay-by just outside the park. The lava field in the F/G is quite fertile and would have more vegetation if the rainfall weren’t so low. You can just about make out small green dots of the slope of the volcano that show shrubs of a species of eucalyptus that are very drought-tolerant.

There is a little more vegetation by the roadsides, encouraged by nitrates and moisture from car exhausts and that probably accounts for the extra greenery at the base of this picture.

Just a little south are the vineyards that use the dark grey volcanic gravel where each vine is grown in a pit that shelters it from the wind and keeps it at the right temperature.

Hi Ivan

A lovely composition which shows the volcanic landscape very well. Nice dof and loighting.

I have stopped at the same place.

Hola Ivan,
UNa imagen de la Luna, realmente los paisajes de Lanzarote son espectaculares, pero el parque de Timanfaya es espectacular. Has hecho un buen trabajo en ésta foto.
Saludos cordiales.
Ferran.

Hello Ivan,

Beautiful capture of this landscape. Excellent POV and sharpness. Superb colours. I wonder if there is life there, not that much without vegetation I think.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hello Ivan,
what a wonderful perspective and capture.
Simply perfect.
Have a wonderful day

Ciao Ivan,
bellissima immagine di questo paesaggio vulcanico, dove oltre alle forme di vita a noi invisibili sembra iniziare un ritorno della vita visibile, ottima definizione, magnifici i colori.
TFS.

Hi Ivan,

I love seeing your shots of the Island of Lanzarote - a place I knew nothing at all about until you and Ulla visited there. It is fascinating to see the lava field and the beautiful subtle colors of the volcano. Thank you for your informative notes as well as the lovely landscape.

Hi Ivan
Hi neighbours
Very interesting place and beautiful colors
very good sharp
well done.

I study this kind of Geology and have for quite a while but my wife is the expert...I wonder if it is considered an active volcano...The USGS has some guidelines but they don't always match what other countries do..for instance the Richter Scale was designed for strictly the LA Area of S Cal, but many use it around the world which is NOT a correct measurement....but beyond that...it looks pretty desolate out there Ivan... Nice geologic capture..

Hi Ivan. Its like going on hoiday with you being able to see all the different places. This looks like a area of the moon / As you say very little in the way of plant life. Your picture shows some unusual colours in the sides of the volcano.all with interesting notes . TFs.
Nick..

Hello Ivan,

It does look a very arid and bare location. Not surprising from your notes! And yet, it has a raw beauty!
I like how the colour tones define the ridges and slopes. It is nicely composed.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Ivan Dostum,
An amazing wonderful and beautiful capture of this volcanic area with fine details and colours.
TFS and cheers,
Bayram

Thats pretty bare alright Icvan.
Not a whole lot of vegetation in sight here.
It must be a very dry landscape indeed.
It reminds me of parts of our volcanic plateau in the middle of the North Island.
Great shot.
Cheers
Steve

Hello my friend Ivan,
I thank you from heart that you and Ulla had shared with us the beautiful landscape of volcanoes captured during your holidays in Spain!
this is another good one with the actual colour from a bare volcano and it's beautiful! here I can almost feel the heat around that area and it's real dried!
thanks for the informative notes as well
take good care and my warmest regards from NZ
Tony

Hello Ivan,
Great landscape image showing the barren ground of this volcano. The ground still showing evidence of the scorching by the volcano. Splendid notes as well Ivan. thank you for the great posting.
Rick

Hi Ivan,
The view on the 'naked' vulcano is very impressive. I like the subtle difference of color in the soil caused by the many sulfide and iron particals. It is highly interesting to see that this rich soil is lacking the lush vegetation you would expect to see. Your note about the vegetation growing because of the passing cars is very interesting.

Niek

I like the smooth transitions between the tones.
Sharp and clear.
Great DOF.

Excellent work!

Good work, Ivan.
Interesting landscape in Lanzarote. You can't find this on the beach, I suppose:-). Most fascinating geology; I like these reddish colors...
Well done
