Haria Lizard female (Gallotia atlantica)

The Canary island of Lanzarote originated about 20 million years ago as a result of volcanic eruptions that continue up to modern times.

Somehow, during that time species of lacertid lizards arrived on the Canary Islands and evolved to form their own species.

This species, Gallotia atlantica, is found on the neighbouring islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, where it is common despite the lack of vegetation.
This is an immature female, marked by small green spots on her flanks. The male is darker and boldly marked with bluish green blotches.

Despite the very low rainfall the moist Atlantic air round Lanzarote allows the growth of 240 species of lichens that colour many lava fields a yellowish green. These lichens help to break down the minerals in the volcanic rocks and this provides nutrition for a few vascular plant species.

The resulting sparse vegetation is enough to provide a habitat for a dozen species of grasshoppers and other insects and this explains the abundance of these lizards.

However, despite their camouflage, they are very shy and have extremely good eyesight. It is therefore difficult to come closer than 3 meters (10 ft) and one has to be quick to take a shot before they disappear into a rock crevice.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 3 meters with the camera hand-held and this female is about 15 cm (6 in) long and she should eventually attain a length of about 25 cm (9.5 in).

She has a wary expression but she might have looked more relaxed if Bayram had taken her picture!

Prof Bayram certainly gets along well with lizards, Ivan. :)
Anyway, despite its wary eye, this one has offered you a great opportunity to show the best of it in this well managed shot.
Those green dots along its flank are certainly its beauty spots. [The rhyming here is definitely intentional :-).]
Thanks and regards.
Ram

Hi Ivan,

I had to laugh at the last line of your notes. You are right - she is smirking at you. Great shot of this lizard posed on the rock. Her face seems to shine - the eye is marvelous. Good details of the face and skin. The setting and composition are wonderful.

Hi Ivan. A very good close up of the Lizard. You have captured the markings and colours on this female so well. She still looks fairly plump to me. I like the pose with the head turned back for a look at you. well done TFS.

TFS
I will be out of the country for the next 3 weeks and won't be connected with TN
I wish you and Ulla a Merry Xmas and very Happy New Yea
Albert

Well Ivan, your expertly capture of this beautiful -and not frequently seen- lizard can easily compete with Bayram's wonderful lizard tableaus, in spite of the difficult-to-obtain-overall-sharpness POV, the specimen is sharply in focus from tail tip to snout tip, not an easy achievement my friend! TFS this fine looking nature scene.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Ivan

Lovely shot of this cute lizard!
Even if this species doesn't present the most amazing colors on its body, you managed to create a lovely and attractive presentation by seizing this terrific pose it had here.
You also managed to incorporate a little bit of the habitat - and i actually think that the dry vegetation and its shadow work well and makes this even more attractive.
Good sharpness and DOF as well!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: are you sure when they named this lizard they didn't misspell it?...maybe the first "a" should have been an "o" :))

Hello Ivan superb shot of a beautiful lizard to endemic to Canary island. Lovely pose.
TFS and regards,
Bahadır

Hello Ivan !
I love lizards and reptiles, this is a great picture of this beautiful fellow ! Sharpness and details are perfect, we can see the tiny scales, and I also like the very natural colors, and the pose of the lizard looking over his 'shoulder' towards you. Very well done !
Valerie.
