Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis).
Swedish name: Spansk sparv
This is not a Spanish House Sparrow, but a separate species, the Spanish Sparrow!

One of the tourist attractions in Lanzarote is the Cactus Garden. It was designed and laid out in an old volcanic gravel pit, the black gravel being fertile and used for cultivation of vegetables and grape vines. The designer was César Manrique, a man whose art and influence on this island is second to none.

Now the gardens house over a thousand species of cactus from all over the world. Some of these have grown as large as small trees and from some of them the loud chatter of sparrows can be heard from some distance. On Lanzarote the Spanish sparrow replaces the House Sparrow and its chatter is a little more musical than its cousin. It nests in the tiled roofs of older houses and hotels and is even more gregarious than the House Sparrow, keeping in tight flocks.

The cactus gardens provide both water from laid out ponds, to nesting places in the walls and buildings and there is a small restaurant that provides some food.

This is a male in winter plumage. In the summer the head cap becomes more chestnut brown and the breast is much more heavily streaked with black. The white eye-brow also differentiates it from the House Sparrow. In parts of Italy and Spain both species hybridise.

Spanish Sparrows are found in N. Africa, Spain, all the Mediterranean islands, the Canary Islands and S. Turkey.

The female is shown in the WORKSHOP and she is almost indistinguishable from her house sparrow counterpart.

This was taken at a distance of about 5 meters (16 ft) with the camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hello Ivan,

You have made a very good photo of the sparrow. Image quality is very high. The bird is shown in great sharpness so that details of plumage can be very well seen. Colors are very fine rendered being well saturated and looking natural. The cactus beneath and behind the bird looks interesting. Plant and bird stays very nice against the blurry background.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Spanish Sparrows are truly good looking, Ivan.
This handsome male looks stunning -- standing there on some kind of cactus plant, presumably.
The image is technically outstanding and aesthetically very pleasing.
I also like the plain BG with those mild dabs of colours merging so well with the generally grey tone.
TFS and regards.

Hello Ivan
A top quality image of this Spanish Sparrow. Excellent detail and perfect exposure. The blurred background makes the subject stand out. Good notes too!
Kind Regards

Hi Ivan,

If this had a blue sky I would have said if you were in Tucson why didn't you let me know!!! Only kidding - the sparrow is not the same and the cactus is not the same. In fact, with the thousands of sparrows around I have never seen one perch on a cactus. This Spanish Sparrow is wonderful and he does look just like our House Sparrow except for the dark breast. Excellent details of the face, wings and plummage along with marvelous colors. Love the pose, background and composition.

Superb, Ivan, the bird is so well captured in the nice bright light (not too much) on this cactus. I didn't even know House Sparrows had different species and this one is very, very close, from the outside and the little knowledge I have. Thank you for this superb notes, once again, and beautiful picture,

Does this Spanish sparrow whistle in Spanish too? I never knew of these birds at all.
He looks similar to our NZ sparrow (who whistles in Maori) but his breast feathers are much more spotty.
The female is VERY similar to our girls.
Good pose Ivan, I do love these little birds who live world-wide.
