Hola Joe: Tampoco conozco la especie, pero me parece una toma extraordinaria, donde se ven claramente todos los detalles del insecto...además que no debe ser facil tomar una foto a un animal rápido. Saludos.

Hi Joe
Very nice macro. Nice field guide POV, pretty good sharpness, good OOF background. I am not a fly expert. Maybe it is a member of Tachinidae (maybe genus Tachina or Gymnosoma) I hope you will find a correct ID ;-)
Best wishes

Hello Joe,
Excellent sharp picture of this Tachinidae. There are two excellent pictures of it on the site "www.diptera.info" and the species is referred as Gymnosoma cf. clavatum. Excellent exposure and colours.
Cheers,
Mariki

Aha! Spanish Fly!
hmmmmmm..there was something in an old book I read way back when I was about 10-12 years old...I think my hormones were kicking in...when I heard about Spanish fly...not sure any longer what it is..but maybe it is really a Spanish fly? I shall now go off to study chemistry 101 thanks to you! You are always pulling punches...I find myself learning and re-learning from your images...BTW I like the new bio image...nice shot!
(*ADDED after net search) The Spanish fly is the emerald-green blister beetle, in Latin Cantharis vesicatoria or Lytta vesicatoria which is found in the southern parts of Europe. The body of the Spanish Fly is usually 15-22 mm long and 5-8 mm wide with a strong smell and a burning taste. The dried and crushed body of the Spanish Fly beetle was earlier used medically as a irritant and diuretic, but was also regarded as a potent aphrodisiac.

Hello Joe,
I have taken this species but not as close ans as well as this!
This is Gymnosoma rotundatum, the Ladybird Fly, a parasite on shieldbugs.
Great sharpness and fine dorsal POV.
It is also found in England, but is less common.
Thanks for sharing this one: I won't bother posting mine for some time!
Ivan
Yo Joe!
Agree, this fly looks beautifull! I like tigh composition with lots of details and dorsal view. Shinning colours look also good. Hmmmm... it looks almost tasty :-)
By the way - I like your new intro photo, but your gear seems to be far too heavy for you ;-)

Sharp, clear, and very colourful! I was trying to find any details about family or genus. Krzyszto suggested that this can be a member of Tachinidae, and later Marie and Ivan added details about genus. I think Ivan's ID of species is correct, this is rather characteristic species :)
Very nice capture!
Greetings from Lodz!

Hi Joe,
I used to think a fly was a fly! Amazing macro - I especially love the wings and eyes. I really don't know how you do this. When I go near a fly it flies away!

Hello Joe,
Nowadays, I often meet these flies. I am not sure its species. I think same or very similar species. At least, I have an opinion about them after your great post. Excellent sharpness and details, superb colors. Congratulations indeed.
Maybe buying a sigma 180mm will be better for me:)
