Cirsium palustre, the Marsh thistle or European swamp thistle, is a herbaceous biennial species of the genus Cirsium. It is a tall thistle that reaches up to 2 metres in height. The strong stems have few branches and are covered in small spines. The spiky leaves are narrow and lobed. The purple flowers are produced in the northern hemisphere from June to September and are 10-20 millimetres across with purple-tipped bracts. It is native to Europe where it is particularly common on damp ground such as marshes, wet fields, moorland and beside streams. In North America it is an introduced species that has become invasive.

Abundant in “palustris” communities of the Iberian Peninsula with Atlantic climate.

Hi Ferran,

A beautiful and well deserved dedication to Ivan who has shared so much and taught many of us so much. This Thistle branch is marvelous with wonderful colors and excellent details. I love seeing the flowers with the many buds. Those spines look like they could cause some pain - like our cacti. A lovely background and composition. Simple and beautiful.

This is a lovely image and a great dedication to Ivan. I love the details of the blossoms, the semi opened buds and the fully opened flowers of this thistle. It shows the different stages of the life cycle of a flower beautifully. The details of the thorny stems and the tiny green leaves is also seen with great clarity. It was a pleasure to stop by this lovely lavender coloured thistles. Thanks for sharing.
