The black lemur lives in the rainforests of the northwestern tip of Madagascar and the island of Nosy Be and Nosy Komba. It's the kind of lemur has a more pronounced sexual dimorphism: males are completely black, while the coloration of the female is brown with some areas even clearer.

In arboreal or nocturnal and crepuscular activity, feeding on fruits, leaves, buds and flowers, and form groups of up to 20 animals that usually have a higher number of males and females.

Although its original habitat is the jungle, the black lemur is able to adapt to other more open environments and often penetrates into the plantations, leading in some places is hunted and persecuted as a pest.

It is a species protected under the Washington Convention in Appendix I.
