This one is from my Spain archive. I found this guy really cool and wanted to share with you :)
I had a plan to make few shots of this kind during the day trip to different nature reserve but didn't found any of them. So in the end of day @ hotel parking area inside hotel I found this guy taking sun bath :) He was really nice in the late afternoons light and allowed me to take many shots. I have him looking left, right, up and down. I was thinking to make postcard with all 4 poses but one big is always better for showing all details than 4 small.
I was hand holding camera using 800mm and manual settings.

The Hoopoe (IPA: [ˈhuːpuː]) Upupa epops is a bird in the same order of often colourful near passerine birds as the kingfishers, bee-eaters, and rollers.

However, in the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy, the Hoopoe is separated from the Coraciiformes as a separate order, the Upupiformes. It is the only extant member of its family, although what are now considered subspecies, such as the resident African form U. e. africana, were formerly sometimes given specific status.

Hoopoes are widespread in Europe, Asia and North Africa, as well as Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. They migrate from all but the southernmost part of their range to the tropics in winter.

Their habitat is open cultivated ground with short grass or bare patches. They spend much time on the ground hunting insects and worms.

The Hoopoe is 25–29cm long, with a 44–48cm wingspan. This black, white and pink bird is quite unmistakable, especially in its erratic flight, which is like that of a giant butterfly. The crest is erectile, but is mostly kept closed. It walks on the ground like a starling.

The song is a trisyllabic "oop-oop-oop", which gives rise to its English and scientific names.

The nest is in a hole in a tree or wall. Like those of its relatives the kingfishers, the nest tends to contain copious amounts of faeces and smell very foul as a protection against predators. Nesting hoopoes are capable of squirting fecal matter at intruders...

Hi ralf,
Great POV and well composed, nice catchlight too..
Excellent detail and DOF isolating the bird in your frame well.
Also, your POV serves to show off the birds distinctive head plumage, in opposition to that veeery long curved bill :)
Well done & TFS!
Howard

Hej Ralf,
Great shot of a Hoopoe in fine evening light from a nice low POV. Excellent focusing, DOF in the grass and sharpness of the bird so that he shows really well. Nice catchlight in the eye too.
TFS/ Hälsningar.

Fått lite regn idag! :))
Men jag vill inte ha det när åker till fjällen om två veckor!

Hello Ralf,
Excellent photo of this Hoopoe. I've only seen them from a great distance. I'm glad you choose the single photo. The details are brilliant now. Splendid warm light and colours. Great POV and composition.
Regards,
Peter

Hej Ralf,
I agree with you the Hopooe is a really cool guy!! I love them and their peculiar behaviour. We saw a couple together in a field on Mallorca which I captured but I don't think its quite good enough for TN. This one is great though, very sharply in focus and the light and colours are beautiful.
They always seem to have dirty beaks! :-) Well done!
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hi Ralf,

Hey Ralf!
What a fantastic shot of this Hoopoe!!
I'd love to see one of these someday :-)
Very, very sharp showing lots of detail in the feathers.
Apart from being a tiny bit over-exposed on the chest, the overall exposure is excellent!
Well composed and a great low-down POV.
Superb DOF.
How close were you?

Very well done,
Joe
