New arrivals to ther Canary Islands the Collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto) has colonised all urban areas and most of the contryside. It has displaced the domesticated Streptopelia risoria from most urban areas. I'm not sure which this one is as they are hard to tell apart unless you see them together but I'm pretty sure this is decaocto.
Some ecologists believe that the species may be a useful colonist, providing food for the highly endangered Peregrine (Barbary) falcons and Sparrowhawks on the islands, as well as the rare Eleonora's Falcons breeding off the North coast of Lanzarote. |
