[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is an exuvia left behind on the branch by a Cicada, after having shed its skin from its nymphal instar.
(ID: member of Cicadidae family. Thank you Jim for your help and useful info!)

The whole bush looked really impressive, like a sort of cementery, since there were a huge amount of "shells" left...

Moulting, otherwise known as Ecdysis, consists on the shedding of teh exoskeleton during growth to form a new, larger covering. After moulting, an arthropod is described as teneral; it is fresh, pale and soft-bodied. Within one or two hours, the cuticle hardens and darkens following a tanning process similar to that of the tanning of leather. It is during this short phase that the animal grows, since growth is otherwise constrained by the rigidity of the exoskeleton.

Ecdysis may also enable damaged tissue and missing limbs to be regenerated or substantially re-formed.

Hola Marta,
Que linda foto!
Wonderful summer colors and details, great POV
and lovely composition.. Well done

Everton.

Hi Marta,
It is the shell left after the last moult of the Cicada (I'm not sure of the particular type or species you have in Spain). Photo of a Dog Day Cicada The nymph climbs out of the ground and after moulting becomes the bug in the photo, leaving behind the shell Shell found in France. Beautifully captured photo with excellent detail and color, you can even see the hairs. Outstanding BG, composition and POV. Fine job.

TFS
Jim

Hi Marta,
Splendid shot of this old skin with lovely natural colours and sharp details. The lighting is superb here and it stands out well against the BG. I like the way it hangs there. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Good detail, color, and DOF. Nice POV of the exuvia, and I like the way it's hanging almost life-like from this plant..
