"Black Squirrel" with "Red" Called
This is Sciurus vulgaris Linnaeus, 1758 - Sincap, Kızıl Sincap [TR], Red Squirrel , Eurasian Red Squirrel [EN], Ardilla Roja [SP] from the squirrel family Sciuridae of the suborder Sciurignathi of the order Rodentia. Its range is wide and from almost all Europe to Turkish Thrace (Trakya) and from Balkans throughtout Siberia to Kamchatka Peninsula. After introduction of Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis Gmelin, 1788) of North America to Britain, its population size decreased.
S. vulgaris is listed as Near Threatened (NT) by IUCN.
The species was introduced some other places, e.g. Northeastern Turkiye (Anatolia). It has been from Artvin, Erzurum, Kars, Rize, and Trabzon provinces. The form in this area has white fur except reddish ear and darker tail tips in winter period.
Although the vernacular name of the species shows "Red" (or "Kızıl" in TR) color; its some forms have blackish fur, as like on the photograph, or white fur, as like NE Turkiye.
S. vulgaris is identified easily from S. anomalus Gmelin, 1778 - Anadolu, İran or Kafkas Sincabı [TR], Anatolian, Persian or Caucasian Squirrel [EN]. Later has grizzle coloured in back side and other has ear thufts.
The information is prepared with respect to my works and experience. More information about these species should be supplied on different web pages, e.g. Wikipedia.

On November 01, there was a religious holiday in Spain, so we broke IUCN workshop and visited a nature park near Ojen Village in the W-NW Malaga. Our first purpose was observation of Capra ibex L., 1758 (Alpine Ibex). I saw only single animal, 2-3 km far. Unfortunaley I could not take its photo. But while we had a lunch restaurant in forest (810 m a.s.l.), my friend Professor Nuri Yiğit saw this cute animals. I broke lunch and I took several photographs in dark shadow of pine trees. Light was not enough and it was quick, unfortunately I could not supply good sharpness and focus.

I wish to dedicate this shot my closed friends, Mustafa Sözen "Mr Spalax" and Şakir Özkurt "Çaycı" as a gift from Spain days.

Hola Ahmet. Exelente foto. Muy bella es esta "Ardilla" Nunca he visto alguna de color negro. Muy hermosa. Saludos Luis52.

What an amazing squirrel. I love the ears. It looks like a startled hairdo! : ) The tail is impressive too. I think your focus point was a little forward of the squirrel as the tiles are sharper than he is. I try to focus on the eyes but sometimes animals are just too quick.

I found so beautiful the black and shining fur with that white strip running along its abdomen.

Hello Ahmet,
Nice capture of a melanistic Red Squirrel in a fine pose and with good sharpness. It shows up well despite the unfavourable BG.
Thanks for sharing this,
Best wishes, Ivan
