[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a species of tailless monkey called Barbary Macaques. These Macaques can be found in Morocco and Algeria, with those in Gibraltar being the only free-living monkeys in Europe today.

There are about 160 monkeys living in Gibraltar in two main areas. About 20 of them at Apes' Den can be observed closely. However, the largest pack resides in the Great Siege area.

In 1915 the Government provided money for the Army to feed the monkeys and reduce the roaming and marauding that occurred. Responsibility for the monkeys has now reverted back to the Government of Gibraltar. The monkeys often supplement their diet with a few wild plants and can sometimes be seen foraging in the early morning. (excerpted from Gibralter.gi.com)

Due to the overhead light, it was impossible to get a good shot of their faces due to the heavy brow. I liked this shot anyway because the monkey was so relaxed and seemed to be enjoying the surrounding views of Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

Nicely captured shot of the gibraltar pick pocket!
You're lucky to still have a camera with these cheeky chaps about.
Nice capture of the pose. I've done a quick WS to try to bring out some detail of the face.
Thanks for posting

hello alli,
Nice and charming photo! Good composition

Alli, the composition is there, the monkey as the foreground object and the scene view of the sea and harbour, a pity the scan result did not give much details - so I did a workshop to see it diffierently in post processing, hope you don't mind

Hello Alli very good scan of this image , there are lots of details that you have managed to keep.
The South African mob use infill flash as routine when taking wildlife shots to overcome this very problem of overhead light.
Hope this is of use.

My father spend some time during the war in Gibraltar and he always talk finally of these rock apes as he called them.
thank you for sharing such a wonderful photograph . Maybe you could have used a flash to get more light on his face . Jim

Hello Alli,

The composition is really great; the sleeping monkey in the FG and the busy harbour in the BG. Your note is very informative. For a scanned image this is really very nice (a bit noisy, but I guess scanning was the cause of that.) TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Magnifique photo, on dirait un grand-père.
