RING-SHAPED TAIL LEMUR
DISTRIBUTION:
The Lémur of Ring-shaped Tail (Lemur catta) is a native of Madagascar. His distribution includes a considerable region to the south of the island.
HABITS:
This lémur spends good part of the time in the land. Also it is of diurnal habits.
COMMUNICATION:
The smell they use it to detect the odoriferous marks that they do..
SOCIAL STRUCTURE:
They live in family groups integrated by several adults of both genres and young. These groups, or troops, usually consist from five to twenty-four lémures. A hierarchy or range exists among the lémures in every group. The females are domineering on the males. The sons and daughters inherit the range of the mother. Usually the males born in the group when they acquire certain age disperse whereas the females remain in the natal group.
ACCCIÓN's AREA:
Every group uses an area of action from 5 to 20 hectares. They mark this zone with odoriferous secretion.
REPRODUCTION:
The females only procreate once a year. The period of gestation takes from 130 to 140 days. In a region of his distribution the small ones are born of ends of August at the end of December; to the north the season of reproduction is later in the year, being born the pequeñuelos from March to May. They reach the maturity from two to five years.
LONGEVITY:
There is estimated a longevity of approximately 15 years, though some authors indicate 20 years.
NOURISHMENT:
The nourishment consists of fruits, flowers, leaves, bark of the trees and sap.
PREDATORS:
Between the natural predators of the Lémur of Ring-shaped Tail and other lémures are Culebrera Eagle, Goshhawk, the Eaglet Malgache, Henst's Goshawk.
DESCRIPTION:
Of length in the head and the body it achieves from 30 to 46 cm. The tail measures from 37 to 63 cm. The weight of the adults is between 2.1 and 3.5 kg, being the imprisoned average of the males and the females 2.21 kg. Both genres are of similar appearance.
OTHER NAMES:
The Lémur of Ring-shaped Tail also is called "Catta".
CAPTIVITY:
East is the lémur that we see in the zoos with major regularity. It is relatively easy to support and in captivity it produces without major problems. They are diurnal and normally well assets, something naughty and nice. Always they steal us not less than 10 minutes in our visits to the zoos.
