[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a repost of a shot I posted earlier at trekearth. After understanding that treknature exists I find it more appropriate to post it here.
********
During my do-nothing-holiday I couldn't resist a little macro with my new lens. Especially when I saw there was a butterfly garden in the area of Empuriabrava, a town at the golf of Roses. Inside the butterfly garden I found a lot of tropical butterflies amongst which this one, the Ismenius Longwing. In latin: Heliconus Ismenius.
This was my first try at shooting butterflies and when I came home I discovered that a lot of my shots seemingly sharp on the camera LCD where not sharp at all. So I went back and did a second attempt. This time with a higher ISO and shorter shutter times. The results were better but still I am not happy. This shot is one of the better ones from the first round.
I did no cropping only levels.

Wat een inkomen op TN Jan, wat een prachtig geplaatste vlinder, zeer scherp en toch uiterst zacht van kleuren, mooi werk hier! Mogen wij nog veel plezier beleven aan uw mooie macro's!

Great image, DOF is good, sharpness is good on the eyes. Great detail and colour, well done.

Very good.

Really nice, I can't figure out where the other two legs have gone. Nice DoF and composition. Very well done.

Jan welkom hier op TN,
Erg goede eerste inzending met je nieuwe lens die je waarschijnlijk wel veel plezier zult geven. Goede compositie, goede kleuren, goede dof, gewoon goed werk dus. Welkom Jan.

Great shot Jan, good colors and composition..excellent DOF to .. Well done !

I recognize the problems described in your note, this has also happened to me. DOF is very shallow in macro mode.. ;-)
It looks as if the surroundings were pretty dark with only the butterfly itself to lighten up the photo, so the camera will select rather long exposure time. If you're allowed to use the following settings: Manual mode, F-13, 1/200 and fill flash, possibly with a piece of paper for diffuser. I've shot dragonflies with those settings ;-)
The butterfly stands out nicely, the front end is sharp, but the F-4 leaves the tail end outside DOF range. Nicely placed in the frame.

magnifique couleur dont l'oeil est attire de suite...belle macro bien nette...les détails sont fantastiques...bravo...amicalement BI

Belle macro pour joli papillon ! La courbe de la feuille apporte un petit plus à mon avis...
Well done.

This one is a wonderful shot, very, very nice colours, good sharpness and a beautiful butterfly. Je gaat lekker hier op TN, Jan !

Even if there's a lack of sharpness on the wings, I like this photo for the framing, the soft light and colors and the exceptional eyes details. Many diagonals make it an attractive image.

Very beutiful butterfly! Is it small? I like this photo!
