It's a Nymphalidae. The specie is a Charaxes jasius (Linnaeus, 1758).
Known as "Two-tailed pasha" in english.
The bigest Rhopaleocera in Portugal.
A bit far away from the butterfly, but still a very good photo!
Very good on details!
Nice POV and BG!
TFS!
Hi Kristy,
that is a great capture of the shy and quick moving "Pasha" - "Charaxes jasius" - as Paulo identified - of the western Mediterranean. "Erdbeerbaumfalter" in German. Perfect pose, showing both sides of wings in good order. Perfectly exposed colours in a pretty and wild looking back light.
My feeling is that the original data of your full size image have enough good resolution and sharpness to allow a much closer cropping - presenting the butterfly much larger than you did here - that would greatly increase the impact of that excellent and rare capture.
Please go ahead and prepare a second posting of the Pasha - tightly cropped for a close up! According to a quick research, there is only one picture from that species in the TN collection - that one would certainly be pleased to have such a pretty counter part.
Thank you, and best regards,
Peter
