Psathyrella piluliformis
Today I post this beautiful mushroom which is able to tolerate quite cold temperatures. Psathyrellas are very tricky, they are quite easy to recognize when small but they can grow scattered or clustered, colour varies several times while growing and shape is incredible different depending on the growing conditions, you will be able to see in my next posts. At least there are not a lot of mushrooms in winter and that is a good clue :-D

This ones are quite old specimens.

Some info:
Pileus: Cap 2-4.5 cm broad, convex, broadly convex at maturity; surface smooth, moist, hygrophanous, chestnut-brown to rusty-brown, fading to yellow-brown to tan, the margin usually darker and appendiculate with veil fragments, the latter white, then dark-brown from maturing spores; flesh pallid, thin, fragile.

Lamellae: Gills adnate, crowded, narrow, light-brown becoming dark-brown in age.

Stipe : Stipe 2-7 cm tall, 0.3-0.7 cm thick, hollow, fragile, equal or the base slightly enlarged; surface white, smooth; veil white, fibrillose, soon deciduous, remnants left on the cap margin or forming a faint superior annular zone.

Spores : Spores 4.5-6 x 3-3.5 microns, elliptical, smooth; spore print dark brown.

Habitat : Grouped or clustered, usually at the base of hardwood stumps; fruiting from late fall to mid-winter.

Edibility: Questionable. Described as edible in some texts but not substantial enough to be of culinary value. There is also the possibility of confusing this mushroom with the potentially deadly Galerina autumnalis.

Comments: The genus Psathyrella is a large group, many of which are very difficult to identify, Psathyrella piluliformis (hydrophila) is one of the few species that is relatively easy to recognize. It is distinguished by a clustered fruiting habit, usually at the base of hardwood stumps, a hygrophanous brown cap with appendiculate veil fragments that in age become colored with maturing spores, and a white, fragile stipe. Galerina autumnalis, a mushroom containing deadly amatoxins, is similar in color and size, but has a viscid/sticky cap when moist, the cap margin is typically striate, not appendiculate, and the spores are rusty-brown rather than dark brown.

Hope you like!

Good one again Filipe the mini tripod works well for this slow speed shot and the F8 gives a realy good DOF allowing us to see all of this group sharpley and the Bg enough to get a feel for the suroundings.

Great Felipe.
Yes I like it.
Great DOF, sharpness and very good composition.
And a very good and informative note.

Another nice mushroom shot. You're an expert at handling the light and getting the maximum out of your F-8 ;-))

Felipe, I agree with Bente's comments... You're the "mushroom expert" there is no doubt! Happy New Year!!

A confusing bouquet or a deadly arrangement - it seems this fits well into your discription of this fungus. Nice note Felipe, and texture, exposure, mood, pov all spot on here.

Excellent DOF on the group, Felipe. The light was in your favour. I know you don't like the flash on these fungi. The four blades of grass add a nice touch. Well done.

Hi Felipe,
Good photo, I like it even if I prefer photos with flash.
The taxonomic identification is correct; the mistake is only nomenclatural:
Psathyrella hydrophila (Bulliard 1791) Quélet 1886 is a synonym of Psathyrella piluliformis (Bulliard 1783) P.D. Orton 1969.
The correct name is the second like you have rightly been writing about others photos.
In fact Psathyrella piluliformis is priority because of typus-dating (1783 versus 1791, see above), published by Jean Baptiste Francois Bulliard as Agaricus piluliformis in "Herbier de la France" figure 112.
