Spartium junceum

Synonyms: Genista juncea Scop., Genista odorata Moench
Common names: giesta de Espanha, ginestra, gyldenris, Spanish broom, weaver's broom

Habitat. The Spanish Broom is a small shrub, indigenous in the south of Europe and cultivated as an ornamental plant. The flowers are large, yellow and of an agreeable scent.

Medicinal Action. The Spanish Broom in its medicinal properties closely resembles the common Broom, but is from five to six times more active. The symptoms produced by overdoses are vomiting and purging, with renal irritation. The seeds have been used to a considerable extent in dropsy, in the form of a tincture.
The flowering tops have diuretic and purgative properties and administration is as infusion, tincture and medicinal wine.

Only limited amounts should be taken of any preparation made from this plant, as the cytisine content can provoke a toxic condition. It is thought that cytisine may have a slight antidote effect on the venom of vipers but this has still to be proved. Spanish broom has an efficacious and potent diuretic action.

Other Uses. It can be used commercially as a source of fibrous material -by macerating the twigs- for rope making and canvas-weaving. The smaller branches are used to make baskets, rather like osiers in wickerwork. A yellow colouring substance can be extracted from the flowers. The branches are often made into brooms.

Very nice photo, Jose.
What i like the most from this picture, is the splendid contrast between the flower and the BG. Very well done!
Also nice details, lovely colors and good composition.

Hi Jose,
You certainly have a great range of wild flowers in your region. As always a very complete post from you, a great note which is interesting to read. It's a nice shot too, lovely detail and great DOF. Excellent light, shadow and colours in the background provide a perfect contrast to the bright yellow of the flowers. I posted a workshop to correct the tonal ranges, hope you like it and find it useful.
Best regards,
Adrian

Hello Jose
Although the image is perhaps a little bit dark, it is most attractive. I love the composition, the contrast, the well-handled dof. Another fine positing from you

Hello Jose,
Great color and light..Good detail and DOF, with the BG providing nice contrast..To nit pick :)
The flower could be a tad sharper, and there is some evidence of PP around the flowers petals..
Excellent notes,
Well done and TFS!

very nice close up, the spartium flowers are opening in a special mechanism, puhsing out the pollen like a spray bomb. This happens only once per flower. Obviously this happend in the flowers that you photographed. Ori

Hi Jose !
Great close-up on this beautiful flower ! It's nice to see three flowers, each one from a different angle, and I love the contrast between yellow flower and BG. Details, exposure, composition and BG are really perfect. Very well done !

Beautiful composition Jose and excellent yellow colors.
Tree brothers on an excellent BG
See you

Hola Jose!
The pov of your capture is so perfect to give us the profile and face of this tiny beautiful flower, which I've met in Greece too. I've made a simple autoleveling workshop to make the yellow color more vivid, but then I saw that jmp has made almost the same.
